1k..on the money with spec that many £1.5k bikes dont have

Couple of suggestions:

Boardman hardtail - not sure what the price point of the pro hardtail is now but the level of kit on the bikes, foor the money, is usually very good.

If you are not too bothered about the branding i would also take a look at the Decathlon website at the Btwin/Rockrider 8.2. £800 gets you a high spec manitou fork, avid elixir 5 brakes and sram x9 shifters/mechs. Very good spec for the money.
