Hi All,
I thought that because I live only 5 mins from Halfords that a care plan for £20 per year was not bad... it isn't really - but...
Today I buckled my wheel slightly. I asked the guys in Halfords 'can you do this on the care plan?' - 'Oh yes'.
Well, the wheel is a Mavic Crossride so has a different spoke to usual. 'We don't stock them'. I asked if they could be sourced... 'Oh yes, but you have to pay for them & they only come in packs of 100'.
It wasn't even a joke!
Does anyone know where I can sources just a few please?
i fitted a new chain to a relatives bike. They had the careplan. It went in for a service. It is pretty good value tho. in general. They got a phone call when the bike went in. Needs a new chain. They gave the phone to me. The lad sounded pretty scared. I asked what was wrong with the chain. Has said it was 'wobbly'and needed replacing.I explained it hadn't even been used yet.He went pretty quiet. It still ahd the sram grease on it.
In general if you don't fall for the bs then it is really good. However they try to recoup money in other ways and 90 percent of people will fall for the bs.
they come in much smaller packs than that. I canny mind the log in to the b2b but i seem to remember packs of 12 or 14 depending on each side of the wheel spoke count etc
i'd source the spokes yourself and get them to fit them if you trust them.
generally however i have always liked halfords. They can be very good. Just like most things depends where you go. If you trust the mechanic in your local and know a bit about bikes then it'll probably work out ok.
@juiced & thebikechain: Thanks to both of you. I would but a pack of 12 & I would not fall for their BS. Unbelievable that they'd try to rip folk off.
I know bikes well but just can't fix em... because I'm a knacker with a spanner.
100 indeed!
to be fair, most spokes are qty 72 or qty 100.
They may - due to their size - buy 100 at a time.
However, you can buy them smaller.
Can you explain why the spokes need to be replaced if the wheel is only slightly buckled?
bored so logged in...
Packs of 12. They would need to raise a PO for product codes
KIT 12SPK CROSSRIDE D 09 261MM
Ref: 996875
or
KIT12FRT SPK CROSSRIDE UB/D 09
Ref: 996892
However, on an on has a good Q.
If you struggle, we have them in stock i think... not on website i would imagine as we dont list things like that at the mo but if it turns out you really need some then we can send a qty to you.
Are any of the spokes actually broken?
Take the wheel to a proper bikes FF$!
The spoke need replacing because it's bent. I would take the wheel to a better shop if I hadn't just paid £20 for a care plan.
Bikechain, you're on - I'll but from you, ta.
send me an email to shop@thebikechain.co.uk with what you need, i.e. fr or rear, drv or non drv and I will sort. Think we have drv side in drawer but they are a few days coming if we need to order.
Not in tomorrow so won't do anything until monday if thats cool.
local halfrods was talking to the mechanic, he used to have his own shop, was a mechanic on a race team in the states for years, then came back to the UK to a divorce which had swallowed everything.
and yes, I believed him, so now he works in a halfords for minimal coppers, and with relavance to the thread, for the care plans they obviously need spokes right? Wrong, its halfords policy NOT to stock spokes, as they are a slow seller and take up too much shelf room.
FACT!!
Only the bikehut ones sometimes stock spokes, and even then, pretty much just plain gauge cheapies to cater for what they normally have to deal with, i.e. £80 saracens and apollos.
I use the same 'store policy' when it comes to buying cheap batteries for my camera. Most garages/supermarkets have them for £5-8 each. B&Q always stock them, but when they have been on th shelf for more than 6months, they reduce them, to about £0.25-50p each, despite having a shelf life of around 5years.
WIN (for me).
