After running some very icey rapids on Sunday, decided to stick to bikes for a bit over the holidays till the weather improves ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Anyone biked along Hadrians Wall? Any good hostels, cheap accomodation around there and do you think its for the MTB bike only or the road bike?

Thanks,

I've walked sections of it as its just up the road from me. you can't actually (officially) ride any of the actual wall. and to be honest, you wouldn't want to. Hadrians way cycle-route (sustrans 72?) runs parrallel and is mainly on roads. But all the roads up there will need ice-tyres at the moment.

Yeah, I rode it a couple of years back, was great fun. As bandito mentions, the cycle route is the one to go for but you do still get to see much of the wall. There's a nice campsite outside of Wylam (can't remember the name) and the Boathouse pub in Wylam is great.

We wild camped the other night near to Vindolanda Fort (spooky), it only took 3 days relaxed riding, but this was in the Summer.

Do it!

It's not doing a good job of keeping the barbarians out though.

Dashed kind of the Romans to build it however.

It is the most boring pile of rubble in the Northern Hemisphere. Go to the coast - much nicer!

So, is it rideable at the moment?
Where is up that way?
Is there a campsite open?

Sustrans 72, thanks. What are ice tyres? I have some very good 4 season tyres on my two road bikes and very big nobbly ones on my MTB ๐Ÿ˜† i still haven't got the nack of the whole bike lingo yet as you might be able to tell. Road or MTB what do you suggest to do this in December?

MTB wise Northumberland is pretty much shut down due to snow, quite a lot of the ungritted unclassified roads are pretty much unpassable too

ice tyres have metal spikes sticking through them and either cost a fortune or can be made with time, patience and 400 screws.

warton - that's a bit pessimistic. I had an awesome ride on sunday evening in the woods round Hexham.

Road bike should be fine for the Hadrians Way.

Only been there once, but the trails around Talkin Fell are good. ALthough no idea what they're like at the moment.
