2 words - Terry Smith, that's the name he's racing under, at least according to Twitter, although for his sake I hope he's not. Terry Smith is way off course
Is he ?
http://trackleaders.com/tourdivide16i.php?name=Terry_Smith
Certainly seemed to deviate earlier on, by some margin! Perhaps he has an old GPX, the distances aren't massive though.
But is very much on-course now.
Distances not huge ? What about the road deviation round nipple peak ?
Old route or not. It's not doing the tour divide race. It's a recreational ride. Bit like turning up to the puffer and deciding to miss out the single track and use last year's fire track instead because it's less boggy and a bit faster.
Meh.
If he was in it for the race then he would have started with everyone else.
In a 2500 mile route, the odd 50 miles isn't significant when you're not racing.
Indeed but at the same time it seems weird to publicise the fact you are going to the race then do the wrong route.
Plus someone on bike packing.net has ID'd Terry Smith out on trail. Nary a side burn to be seen. And I believe them more than a random he said she said statement on a bike website I've never heard of.
I reckon he is in the race and isn't Terry Smith because he's doing it for TV and they don't want his result to ruin the tension of you watching it on TV. 20 odd days? that's gotta be a 3 parter at least!
If he is doing it for TV he'll have to be self-filming as having a crew following him would seem slightly against the spirit of the thing.

This, and I reckon there'll be a whole crew!
Who ever Terry Smith is, word is that he's going to get a disqualified as he's taken many wrong turns and not followed the exact route.
You might disregard 'the spirit of the thing' if there's a ton of cash in front of you. This might also have been the reason Jase chose not to do it with him after he originally said he would ... all conjecture of course.
Anyone know if the route TS has followed is an "old" one ?
Would be a bit of a cockup if so.
all conjecture of course.
Yep. From what I've heard he is doing it unsupported as having a film crew would be in contravention with the rules/spirit of the event. He want to do it anyway, so he is just doing it. Jason's funding was dependent on the TV.

I've certainly seen this suggested.

sauce? or more conjecture?
It was either on here (on this thread or the other TD one) or on the bikepackers.net one.

I have a sauce.

Given that Mike was not awarded the record a couple of years ago due to mandatory diversion off-route to avoid forest fire, I can't see any other outcome.
Presumably everyone got diverted, though? Mike seems to be making up for it this year - am I right in thinking he's well ahead of the outright record?
details here
Yes, he's well up on record pace.
The projection function on trackleaders has him well under 14 days so yes very much under the record of 14 days 11 odd hours. Long way to go and all that though of course. There seems no indication of diversions for forest fires this year. Here's hoping.
I read a forum that says Guy is not racing, that he is a no show.
here
But there was a Facebook post on the tour divide riders group with a photo of him part way along the route. I think it was a Subway in Whitefish Montana. A few days into his ITT ride. It's all rather a mystery we will find out eventually I guess.
I'm surprised some of you guys haven't been through his bins to determine his wherabouts ๐ฏ
Apparently sighted in Montana. In summary:

Not Terry Smith[/*]

Riding with a big group so presumably not trying to do it competitively[/*]

No tracker[/*]
Source is the bikepacking.net thread.
On the tracker website the owner/co-ordinator of said website has said that he's riding but with a private tracker. Or words to that effect.
He is on route and doing it as an itt
A good friend also doing the ride had lunch with him yesterday.
I hope someone emails Terry Smith about this thread after the event & he has a good chuckle about the international intrigue he's caused all the lovestruck teenagers. ๐

Using a route map from 2011!!?
I'm sorry but what a ****ing moron. Is he trying to be deliberately more stupid as he believes it gives him more character?
What is wrong with this forum!!!!
That man is riding 2700+ miles averaging over 140 miles and your calling him a moron?
What ever guys intentions he's doing stuff most can't manage and the rest dream of but only the few do.
Makes some sense. He can write about/present a programme on doing the TDR without it impinging on anyone else's event. If there is any support at all for him then he was never really competing the 2016 race anyway.
Guy Martin.... can cycle 2700+ miles averaging over 120 a day but can't download an up to date route card. Gets lost several times and cycles over 100 extra miles... gets disqualified from his ITT. Okay maybe moron was a bit strong! ๐
This thread is funny. 5 pages about a man doing a bike ride. I could understand if it was about the ride, as it's a bloody remarkable thing to do, and anyone who does it deserves all the kudos and plaudits on offer. But has it occured to those who are questioning him, calling him names or who are annoyed that he's not got a tracker or live-blogging every time he goes for a pee that he might not be doing it to impress you?

Sounds very much like the classic type of day to day difficulties that someone living with an autistic spectrum disorder might have.
Nothing to do with being a moron.

^^^This ,plus he's just a truck mechanic from Grimsby...
Sounds exactly the kind of shit I would do (except the 140 miles a day part... ๐ณ ).
And, by the photos, he looks to be enjoying himself.

Knowing how foggy my mind gets after a 24 hour, I doubt I would have many functioning brain cells after a week, let alone the distance he's covered, so getting lost seems perfectly reasonable to me. ๐
Regardless of whether he's on the wrong route, or been DQed, it's still a huge ride, and if it's personal achievement he's aiming for rather than a win, he's got it.
I'm sorry but what a **** moron.
he gets to ride bikes in amazing places, hit trucks with hammers and gets paid loads for his trouble.
I don't think he's a moron.

I thought he was just doing this for the sake of doing it? If he was competing he'd have set off with the others, and someone said above that the man Miles doing it with him was tied to the TV - no TV, hence no Jason.

Maybe you're applying rules to his ride?
People do the race without GPS at times and get lost. Easily done. Others do the older route for whatever reason they like, maybe at the same time as the TD happens. Some don't spend days worth of time planning the details and wing it, maybe don't spend any time on forums planning it at all. ITTs are a personal challenge so who cares if it's the 'official' route, the route's different most years somehow anyway. Can't blame someone for skipping 40 miles of clag to ride a different route, etc. The GDMTBR is a route that's got all mixed up with the TDR. One is a fixed route, the other isn't.
He's lost a bit of weight, eh! Looking very trim.
Looks to be having fun, so he's doing it right.

You're not doing the whole "STW has a man crush on Guy" trope any favors!

I don't understand the link between riding a bike and IT proficiency!?!
Looks to me like he's having a great time and not caring one bit that Jekyl's head has burst with the inconsideration of not following 'the correct route',
How do you disqualify yourself from your own "individual" ride anyway?
I'm in for it next year and if I've got half the inclination to have a chat and a laugh with somebody at the mileage that this bloke's at, I'll be pretty amazed and I like a laugh and a chat as much as the next person.
im just reading one of his books - basically he doesnt like teh fame and all the shit that goes with it he just wants to ride his bikes with no fuss.
