Much as I like my LBS's they're generaly 2x the price and it takes time/effort to get to them and I'd rather spend my limited weekend time with the missus than waiting while the Saturday boy tries to convince me that octalink and ISIS are interchangeable if I just tighten it up enough.

But, at least something, even if it is twice the price, anodised in a hideously clashing colour and not quite what you went in for will be in stock. and If you buy soemthing that really needs a cheep/tiny/small 2nd part to work it may well be included or at least available to buy at a not so cheep price.

This month:
Bought Stans rims from Merlin, which came with a big warning not to build them without nipple washers. Fine, but you don't buy Mavic's and have to go back to the shop to buy a packet of eyelets and a riveting tool. If it needs them, include them!

Bought a shimano spoke key from Wheelies, only it wont be in stock untill the end of the month, so why have it on your site then!

Bought a packet of 500 nipple washers (it was cheeper then buying ~60 from anywhere else, and they were oval which looks like they'll fit better, so I'll have 390 left over if anyone needs them) from Singletrack bikes, fine the site says there'll be a 4 day delay, I can wait that long. Now they should have them in 10 days.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Possibly not the time to tell you that I've never used washers on any of my builds ๐Ÿ˜•

Yea, but I've had poo's that weigh more than your bike ๐Ÿ™‚

oh never mind.

I know you're busy organising more important parties, but can we have another Swinely sexy party? I've got a hall pass for the rest of the month to go riding as she's on call ๐Ÿ˜€

I've never repaired a stans rimmed wheel that did have nipple washers.. Where did they get that info from?

And FWIW, you *do* buy 819s and then realise that you need the eyelet tool...

tinas - helped James ge the Life built up on Sunday. We needed to try about 6 different L (and not so L)BSs to find full length cable outer, and had to sprint back to the car at one point to save it from being towed, but it's all done* and looking good!

*bar a front derailleur the right size.

yes, but that's a tool, like a spoke key, the little bit of paper was adament that under no circumstances should the wheels be built without washers, it also says that they can be built with ~2x the tension of other stans rims, so I Presume the washers do the eyelets job and let the builder use normal tensions, as I've got 500 of the buggers I'll fit them in the 29ers rims as well while I'm at it. No washers would be like buying some hubs and them coming with a note that they shouldn't be ridden without bearings.

@ned, good to hear it, although I never used it with these 'gears' you speek of :p

Yup.. It was me being a numpty and thinking that the other Mavic tool we had would be the right one!

I don't believe that 2x tension claim though. AFAIK, the older Stans rims would take 800N and the newer ones 1000N. I'll have a look for the specs on the website.

I'm totally wrong.. Here's the answer:

No mention of nipple washers. They're not a bad idea though, just might not give a huge benefit in terms of spreading the load on the rim.

Alright, let me rephrase, I worked for 10 years in a shop that build dozens of sets of Stan's rims, and I don't know of anyone who's used 'em ๐Ÿ™‚

Long ago I made the decision to simply not buy from online retailers who don't have reliable "in stock" info on their site. Works for me.

That's the bit of paper.

*125kgf is necessary for tubeless road use. Nipple
washers are highly recommended for all wheel builds
with the Alpha 340 rim.

Not double, but upto 125kgf from 95-100kgf

oh yeah.. it's on my link too.. word for word!
I'd try and get use of a tension meter if you can then. Don't use it with inflated tyres though.

edit: the washers would probably help with binding when winding them up more.. Especially with alloy nips. That's probably the reason for the recommendation.

.... alternatively, phone your LBS during the week, and ask if they can order the parts in for the weekend, then you can pick them up and walk out. You don't have to listen to the Saturday boy....

personally built over 100 pairs of wheels with Stans ZTR rims of various flavours and have never used / heard of "nipple washers"

never had any of my own ZTR rimmed wheel sets or my customer's ZTR rimmmed wheel sets ever come back with rim / spoke / nipple problems?

never seen "nipple washers" on any of the 'Hope Hoops' wheelsets we started buying which had Stan's ZTR rims...

..I would always use a touch of Finish Line wet chain lube on the nipple / rim interface when building, and always brass nipples (DT Swiss) never aluminium alloy nipples

sounds like complete B.S. from Merlin, to me??

Have a look at the link on my prev post ES. Its not Merlin, but Stan's who say so. Nipple washers are sometimes used on road wheels that employ hidden nipples. They're not that common though.

In defence of Merlin they've always got it spot on with my stuff.

Purchased a shock pump from an online store which said it was in stock only to have an email today saying it was out of stock and their supplier will not have any until April.

Well, just to waggle my wheel-building nob a bit, I have built over 1000 wheels on Stan's rims and I have never used nipple washers either. I've built on the full range from Race 7000s and Alpha 340s to Flows with the all sorts of spokes. Not used washers on any of them.

@bikewhisperer

when I worked for Freeborn we were the original UK importer of Stan's for many years before there was much widespread interest / belief in tubeless tire conversions

we were never told anything about spoke nipples by Stan's in all these years and we must have built 1000s of sets over the years before Paligap signed a more lucrative deal with Stan

The link only recommends them for Alpha rims. AFAIK, They've only been doing Alphas since after Paligap have become the importers. I may be wrong though, so won't be offended to be corrected!
I can see the sense in it though, although only really for aly nips, and even then the weight of an aly nip and a copper washer probably isn't far off a brass nip, but with none of the durability.
In any case, if we're willy waving, I've built hundreds of wheels too, and repaired thousands more, and I've only seen spoke washers on a couple of really obscure branded wheels.

Good luck with singletrack bikes - sold me tyres - a week later I emailed (no one answers the phone) to see where they were and was told they didn't even have them in stock but would be there in the next few days. Another two weeks later I demanded a refund - would never use them again.

I bought something from wheelies the other day - emailed to say it could be 14 days as was OOS, item arrived within 48hrs. I think it's prob just their business model to order when needed for low-volume stuff
