… before I drop the cash on ordering one from NZ? I need something that’s well-made and reasonably protective of my bikepacking rig (an Amazon cheapie will therefore not do), but packable which I can carry with me as I roll out of the airport, with the option of posting it to a Warm Showers host at the end of my journey.

I’ve seen Cass Gilbert’s favourable review on his blog a few years ago, but more opinions are always welcome. TIA.

I have had one for coming on 20 years and primarily used it back then for bike in car. Until last couple of years, however, I still used it for flying with either a road bike or my hardtail, but there was no padding so the bike was always covered in pipe lagging and large sheets of cardboard to protect it inside the bag (only now do I have space to store a proper bike bag). I never damaged a bike flying like that, but would not take the risk of using one for flying without the lagging and cardboard. It also required more bike dismantling than a proper bike bag to fit and not worry about bits getting squashed etc

Understood. Thanks for that. Ground Effect do make it clear that you’re wise to pop easily scavengeable cardboard etc in to protect the frame. My plan is to use my bivvi gear as padding, and to remove and safely secure the rear mech, disc rotors etc as well.

Looking forward to being free of the gotta-find-a-bike-box stress that’s historically plagued the last day of every overseas bike travelling adventure :0)
