Ay up fellas (and lasses),
After using up my stockpile of Raceface Good n Evil grips I bought back in the day,I'm looking for some replacements but the originals don't seem available in anything other than white (eek !), so.....opinions please, I'm prepared to move with the times and accept lock-ons but they must be in-board lock-ons only, big and grippy and preferably with closed ends, a la good n evils. Any shouts to save me trawling thru t'internet and the thousands around these days ?

Lots of folks on here (me included) really like the DMR Deathgrips, they can be had thick or think, with or without flange, loads of colours, single lockon, super comfortable and relatively cheap

Ergons for me, currently using GA2 fat. Nice and big and feel good with and without gloves. Tried ESI extra chunky but they were a bit too thick and got very slippery in the wet.

I'll recommend what I have, as is etiquette.

Santa cruz palmdale. Might not be as fat as you want but tick all other boxes. Note they are tapered inside to grip at the non locking outboard end, so will increase bar legnth slightly.

I get on with Palmdales and Deathgrips - Funnily enough the grips I have.
My son doesn't like Deathgrips because of the 2 different surfaces though.

By the way chaps, do all the single lock-on grips have a full length inner nylon sleeve or are any made up of just the grip material towards the outer ends (my preference I think) ?

I love the ODI Elite Pro, probably my favourite lock on grip.

But, they are trumped by Renthal ultra tacky push ons. With a run of grip wire, they are pretty much perfect for me.

Dont like deathgrips, although they are nice feel and shape, the inner sleeve cracks on them far too easily (had a few sets this happened to).

I like the Shimano Pro grips. Sort of 1.5 clamp as there's an expanding bung in the end of the bar, but no bar space lost to another aluminium band...

+1 for ODI Elite Pro. Good with gloves or bare hands, tacky but dont seem to wear out quickly, good colours 🙂

+1 ODI Elite Pro although they're expensive for what they are.

Made the mistake of buying thin Deathgrips which spoilt what is a good feeling grip.

If your're more budget conscious/won't pay big brand inflated prices, Token and Funn do some perfectly adequate lock-ons for about 8-10 quid.

Burgtec's Greg minnaar signature bartender pro's are pretty good, with or without gloves, although going back on a bike with DMR sect grips felt amazing, there's such a massive difference between lock on then back to slide on.

+1 ODI Elite Pro

Minnaar's are close but the ODI's get the nod for me. Perfect balance of shape, grip, suppleness and a nice end profile.

endomick: agree that slide-ons still give the ultimate feel, that's why I've stuck with good n evils for years. Will have a look at the DMR sect grips but I'm not sure I'm too keen on an almopst full mushroom grip section. I know, I'm a fussy bugger !
All the single lock-ons I've looked at seem to have a full nylon inner sleeve that robs them of feel imho.

I used to be a die-hard push-on grip fan, love the thick deathgrips now.

Doesn't matter which compound, either are soft enough.

Feel? what are you trying to feel? all lockons have a hard inner sleeve.

DezB : I'm trying to feel the daisies and buttercups under my wheels to smooth my path 🙂 Whatever, it's just my opinion, but all the lock-ons I've tried seem to give a sort of remotness next to the slip-on good n evils I'm used to. Have you tried the two types back to back lately ? Can anyone find me some black Raceface good n evils and I'll shut up and go away !

Soft? Big and chunky? Oury push ons can be had cheap. The lock on version are expensive rocking horse poo.

Actually I've just found that Oury have made a V2 of their lock ons. Single, inboard clamp. But they are $35 + $20 P&P!!!!!!!!

I tried the Death Grips but they were a bit uncomfortable and too short.

I tried the SC Palmdales but they were too thin around the inner section.

I’m now using the Spank Spike grips in the wider 33mm size and they are great. Long too.

I have some Ergon GE1 Evo. Not comepletly sold on them though as they only really work to a full effect when your wrsit stays in the same position. Fine if always standing or always sitting, but not perfect for both!

Looking for something around that diameter though so maybe the ODI ones might work.

Onza Ules or Serfas Connectors. Keep trying lock ons, keep going back to those two.

I thought I would love the Deathgrips but I really dislike the outer section.

I use Uber Ribbed and flanged grips and found them hands down the most comfy.

They usually wear on the outer section within a year probably faster if you ride a lot.

But they are cheap

I have been on Supercaz Grizips for years now. In-board lockring and nice n' soft. They only last about a year though before they are worn out, but second to esi's, they are the comfiest grips I have used.

Gusset Single file grips are really nice. I bought a pair of Deathgrips and just didn't like them. They are cheap, comfy, grippy, come in loads of colours and last exceptionally well.

Looking at Chromag Squarewave XL but not managed to track any down at a reasonable price yet.
They do lots of other styles.

The Squarewave XL's are really thick. I'm in the upper reaches of XL in glove size, and they were too much for "technical" riding for me. Good on the tourer, though.

Edit: Like many others, I have the Odi Elite Pro's on the mountain bike too, and they are very good.

I like Deathgrips a lot in thick/soft (and with the flange because MX!) But I possibly like Specialized SIP XL even more, they came on my Levo and they’re pretty similar feeling but I get more thumb wrap so I can grip lighter with the fingers.

Been using thin soft death grips for a while now but they don’t last at all well.  Always liked the slim ergon grips but can’t get my head around the price. Will try the new burgtec Minnaar version once I get through my stock of death grips

Oneup have one with cut outs on the sleeve, but the 2nd version will iron out any twisting issues apparently, I'll be trying those.

I have a set of ODi pro’s to try alongside my old Ergon GA2 fats and GE1 Evo.

From just gripping them I think the ODi and GE1 are instantly more comfortable rubber wise than the GA2.

From what you’ve said I’d avoid uberbike grips as the ones I bought are too short a length (ooer) and have double locking collars.

Nukeproof Sam Hills are a big thick grip with enough length - but have a double locking collar system. I actually think they’re too thick - I did about 5 or so roses with them before putting them in the spares box.

Both my bikes have Raceface half nelson’s on them. They have a single onboard locking collar and they’re very grippy. In my mind I wanted thicker grips, but each time I try them I find them too big and I get a bit of arm pump.

I love chromag wax.

No lock on

Long

Squishy as a squishy thing

Having a compressor to fit tubeless tyres made getting non lock on grips on massively easier 🙂

Specialized Sip XL. Inboard lock-ring, thick, great pattern. Been my go to grip for years now. Reasonable price too.

also a standard non-XL version that’s thinner, but once you go fat you don’t go back.

Gusset s2's? Used to really like Easton thick( now raceface grippler) but after trying the gussets in the soft compound I'm sold on em, got a pair of non soft ones on the commuter and they are good but just not quite as comfy as the softs. Wear seems good, had em for 5 months or so and loads of life left in them. No noticeable twist either.
