have recently converted to a full suspension and was wandering if it's advisable to keep bearing greased? someone told me you're not supposed to?
Yep. If they are steel bearing type.
I fully rotate my bearings once a month also. The bearings will only move maybe 25% of their rotation as part of the normal bounce. So easily clog up with debris.
mmmm in theory that could be a could idea but once you burst/damaged the seal taking in out you are committed to continuing. Unless you are mechanically adept you also risk causing damage/wear to your frame/links etc by constantly removing/refitting bearings.
believe me I spent 4hrs affecting repairs to a bit of equipment at work the other day.
Bearing manufacturers put a certain amount of grease into a bearing for a reason. Granted mtb bikes are not the best environ for bearings and we get short changed by bike manus fitting inappropriate and cheap units, but that`s life
Bearing life seems to differ between bike makes. My Kona bearings last around 18mths whereas people I know with Santa Cruz are changing them every 6mths or so.
Using any of the bike wash solutions seems to shorten bearing life btw as does liberally spraying the likes of GT85 everywhere. There is a release agent in most of these sprays which by design creeps into any gap(passing seals).
Also noticed an increase in "I have damaged my frame" posts on here recently, might tell you something!!!!
As I hinted at above unless you are used to using spanners buy yourself a torque wrench before embarking upon a bearing removal regime, will save you money in the long run ๐
