Heading up to the Lakes 2nd week of October with my girlfriend, parents and sister. I am planning on putting the bike in the car and we have a cottage in Grasmere for the week. I am looking for some rides starting from Grasmere so that when we get back from a day out I can nip on the bike and go out for an hour or so - any suggestions? Im not really looking to drive anywhere as it will be nice to ride from the doorstep!

First of all there's a very cheeky ride if you go up the hill just past the youth hostel and along the ridge to drop into Easdale. Not even footpaths, just little dotted tracks winding through the rocks. I've not had the opportunity to do it yet.

Something quicker would be a tour of Loughrigg Fell. There's a BW from ?? Cottage in Grasmere that takes you up and over to Rydal bridge, where you can pick up the back lane into Ambleside and turn R at the cattle grid up onto the fell. Depending on the time you have, you could drop into Elterwater or even over to Hodge Close. On the way back you can take in Loughrigg Terrace, best in the evening due to the number of walkers

email me for chapter and verse

Hmmm, my uncle lives at the top of Easdale, that could be very interesting SFB

Wow! I'm told it's quite gnarley, but a good opportunity to go exploring in great scenery! And if anyone tells you off you can point out they have no right of way either ๐Ÿ™‚

Sounds good, as a kid when visiting my uncle I may have rode it on my Grifter!

Are there any rideable routes up out of Easdale (cheeky or otherwise), obviously the path up to the tarn is a hike-a-bike!

rideable is hard to achieve round there. There's a bridleway up Grasmere Common to Lining Crag and Stonesdale, which you can follow to Stake Pass down into Great Langdale - but the one time I went that way I described it as "a good walk spoiled by having to drag along a bike" - though my ability is slightly better these days.

Thats what I always thought, would like to take up your offer for "chapter and verse" if thats ok, YGM.

Any hike-a-bikes out of the valley with descents on the other side that make it worthwhile?

1.Loughrigg terrace. The classic ride from Grasemere, then over to Elterwater for a pint in the Britania. Road honk home.
2. Easedale Tarn. Out and back ride. The bridleway ends at the tarn. Please don't ride this during the day though, wait until the walkers have all gone home.
3. Far Easedale. Get a lift over to Borrowdale and then return via Greenup Edge. You will only ride this once. Perhaps the worst MTB ride in the UK - certainly in the top ten, but everyone should ride it once.
