How good are these gear cables? i have tried a couple of cable systems which are supposed to keep the crap out but after about a year they are really stiff and clogged up. will the gore ones last any longer or should i just stick with changing some cheaper ones more frequently?

Last bike i had came with a set of gore cables on it. For the lifespan of the bike when i had it (about 5 years) they gave me near perfect shifting with a minimum of maintenance, you're not supposed to lube them. When i killed that bike i got a set for rebuilding my bike. Only had it for about 3/4 months but they've performed flawlessly so far.

Basically they get the thumbs up from me.

I just don't really see the point, buy 5 sets of normal cables and change them more often!

The newer style ones are better than the old ones, but they only last until you get some grit in there, then they deteriorate very quickly.

The more you change cables the better at it you become - I change mine every yr or so after winter. I used to use these but can be bothered now and teh XT/XTR outers are much better now and seem to shift fine for ages. Too expensive for me now - I just get the 10m sp41? pack and lasted me ages and built up many bikes with it 🙂

That said I have had the gore ones and the transfil and both shifted very well and lasted 2-3 years on the gore ones (the better of the two IME)

Had mine in since feb, been spot on, shifting is obviously no better than some clean/lubed well set up normal cables, they should just hopefully be more reliable through the wet months (which is quite alot nowadays).
I can see the argument for not bothering with them tho as they are expensive.
Only time will tell if i bother with them on my other bikes.

😀

I've had mine (the ones with the inner liner) since I built my hardtail this time last year. Since then they have performed flawlessly, with only my cackhandedness at setting up a front mech causing any shifting issues at all.
They're not that cheap, but equally for a full set of gear cables that will last a long time, they're not hugely expensive, either. The only issue is that if a shifter breaks or needs replacing, you'll want to cross your fingers that the cable all goes back OK (mine did, thankfully!)
