Shimano.
I just fitted a new SLX as it was same cost as Deore 1x.
They just work, without faff, for a long long time. Easy to fit too.
BB's are cheap cost and last OK - I see them go in a sale and just buy 6 BB's as we've 4x Shimano equipped bikes.
Chainrings are plentiful and cheap.

Thanks all

I see that Shimano can now be had in different chainlines

How do I go about choosing the chain line that I need?

I needed to replace the 1x Suntour crank on junior's bike. It was apparently a boost chainset on there but replaced it with SLX M7000 non boost chainset only for £66 and a Blackspire Snaggletooth NarrowWide Chainring XT8000 for £36.

From what I could gather some manufacturers build the chainline into the cranks (Shimano) and some into the chainrings (Raceface).

any crank that has replaceable rings will do plus a cheap narrow wide ring. I've got deore, XT and a new 12dsp SLX crank on my bikes.

I would probably go for a Sram Dub crankset - got a good deal on one a while back with bb (£85 I think - NX Eagle Dub). With a quick look I can’t see any major bargains at the moment. Their chainrings have the boost / non boost spacing built into them. 3mm offsets is boost / 6mm is non-boost. Truvativ descendant are basically a different branded version of the same cranksets on the lower end. I can’t see anything decent for less than £80 at the moment.

In which case if Shimano options are £50 ish they’re your best bet as the ht2 bb standard is decent and the cranks will be nice enough. I stuck some bargain deore 2x cranks on my hybrid to replace women hideous square taper things - for £35 with rings I was fairly amazed at how nice the cranks look (albeit they’re a bit heavy).

Thread hijack: Can you get third-party chainrings for new Shimano direct mount?

I can't see any on my preferred suppliers' sites.

Does the boostiness of XT M8000 relate to the chainring or the cranks themselves? I’m struggling to find a 165mm set of XT cranks to replace my longer ones.

Cheers for the links - so the other, cheaper sellers will probably have them soon too.

Not that the SLX rings are unreasonably priced, but they only go down to 30t I think.
