Yes, the quality of footage from the HD one is much much better.

The non-HD one isn't completely terrible, its just not as nice as the HD one. Examples below...

Non-HD

HD

There's a 960 HD version coming out that will be cheaper than the "big" one that popstar has.

The 960 HD is a great price ($179) but it unfortunately also misses 60fps, which is a shame as it kind of means you lose the ability to do the slow motion.
It makes a much better proposition than the current normal one though, as far as I can tell.

60Fps won't be used as much. As you can perfectly make slow-motion with 30fps no problem. Also, 60Fps is double size of normal video clip and doubt normal Sunday Warrior going to upload 4GB (10minutes) file movie anywhere. Thats from my experience.
960p if released here, would be the bestest value for money!

The HD also has a rechargeable Li-ion battery which saves using loads of AAA batteries.

Cheers, Rich

popstar - Agree that 60fps is not for everyone but its not true that you can make slow-mo as well with 30fps as you can with 60fps. 60fps played back at 25 is a huge slowdown and looks very crisp and nice if done properly. 30fps down to 25 isnt much or if you slow it down more using software it will look less lovely than doing it properly from 60. Also, any file size difference is irrelevant with uploading as you should be compressing it toi a reasonable size first. It may be bigger to edit with, but the final output file for Vimeo or Youtube should be the same regardless of what rate it was shot at.

Another bonus of the HD version is that there has been a firmware upgrade recently that gives you 50fps and 25 fps (in addition to the existing 30fps and 60fps) as well as an 'upside down mode' which flips the video for you in camera if you mount it upside down on the bike (or often on the chest mount), saves time flipping it on the computer later for viewing.

I was reading that Pinkbike sell to the UK and the HD is $299 there (as opposed to £299 here). Might be worth a look.

There's been a firmware update for the HD from GoPro recently and the camera can now record in 25fps and 50fps.

I've got one. An awesome little camera for the money. Not far off of broadcast quality.

The HD really is a nice bit of kit. Shame it records in MP4, it's a bugger of a format, but otherwise ace. With memory cards not being too expensive these days getting a 16gb SD for it and just recording in enormo-quality is reasonable too.

The old one's not bad at all but not really comparable, the picture quality's far inferior. But it still has the advantages of great mounts and good stability though so it's the best of the lo-res cameras if that's what you actually want. But you don't really.

Urchinboy ... the final movie file size will depend on quality-resolution movie you set, I agree with that. I also noticed that if filmed at 60fps raw files are bigger than 30fps hence to overall file size increase.

Slow motion does look good if shot at good light conditions on a tripod* and if you have a good and patient rider to film. But then if you do that I am not entirely sure you will opt for GoPro hardware. Even then, with some enthusiasm it can be done!

Now, I am off to seek out that firmware upgrade ...

"Why's that?"

Some popular video editing software chokes on it. Standard Vegas generally doesn't run the preview effectively except on an uber-PC due to poor implementation frinstance. Lots of chat on this on the Gopro forum. Powerdirector handles it with ease but is otherwise horrible. Not tried Elements etc yet, still just working through them but it's annoying.

Course you can always transcode it but I'd sooner not.

Fair enough, I use iMovie and don't have any problems (I think mp4 is its native format)
