Would a 44t chainring fit & clear the chainstays?? Or should I re-phrase: Given that the bikes come with a 32T as standard - Is there sufficient room to replace the 32T ring with something nearer 40t-44t?

Wouldn't say so as it's on the middle tabs of a single ring chain set

I was thinking of running a Surly fixed (135mm disc ) hub, which is apparently designed to run with a 50mm chainline ie. chainring in the outer position.

A 40t should fit, I've got a 38t with plenty of room.
