Hmmm I have always been a purist...tea and cake on a ride and just water.

Ive done loads of long distance stuff and yeah ive hit the wall a few times and generally just write those times off as being 'part of the journey'.

Ive recently started riding on the road this year ( haven't we all due to the weather?) and my roadie mates extoll the virtues of the chemical and the stimulant - gels and the such like.

I rode a good distance yesterday and took on a sis gel every 30-45 mins and had an energy powder in my bottle.

I have to say that I felt bloody awful for most of the ride - sluggish and overly sleepy..it was a hot day so part of me thinks that could have been a contributing factor.

But what does everyone else find with these gels ?

Try a few different brands
Make sure you are drinking enough water
Mix the gels/bars with some proper food (flapjacks etc)

They are unlikely to make you feel sleepy, unless you are so used to doing a whole ride on a sugar rush, so there are likely other influences into how you felt.

That's your problem right there. SIS are the nastiest thing around. Try Torq.

Also - to go from nothing to gels and energy powders is a big leap. I choose one or the other - and even then only for longer rides.

Yeah im thinking that the leap I made was also too big...

Too much of a sugar hit - then a post sugar slump?
