I'm struggling to get the indexing set on my road bike, its missing middle gears while shifting down the cassette towards the smallest ring.
Using a mix of Shimano 10 speed components, 105 derailleur (new) with SLX shifter (almost new) on flat bars. end stops working well and can access top and bottom of the cassette, but only getting 8 distinct gears as some mid-gears are being missed.
No obvious bend/damage to the mech hanger, no bent bits on the cassette. Only idea is that the cable outer is fairly old, could that do it? Seems free enough but perhaps more friction than a new one?

The slx shifter has a different pull ratio than what is required for shimano road mechs, they are not interchangeable which is why you are are missing the central range on the cassette - you will have to fit a shimano mtb rear mech if you wish to use flat bars and slx shifter

my first thoughts would be cable sticking in outer. Easy enough to eliminate, either but new outers and cable or free it all up and run some oil down the cable and rub the outer up and down it to free things up a bit.

Somafunk - bugger, that kills my current plan off.
Just checked and it looks like I need a different mech to work with that shifter 🙁

Anyone want a 10 speed 105 mech, done about 20 miles

Shiftmate 6 might work?

Isn't there a bodge you can do by putting the cable on the other side of the fixing bolt, thus altering the pull ratio? or did I dream that bit up?

You can do a slight bodge by placing 3 washers on the cable bolt then attaching the cable to the underside of the topmost washer so that means you have bolt - washer-cable-washer-washer-mech. You have to be careful you secure the cable securely as it can sometimes slip.

It's a bodge but i've got it to work somewhat but still not absolutely perfect crisp gear changes, not as simple as buying a £25 rear mtb mech and fitting it though.
