Looking at getting one of these mainly for road use but also nice to have the option to use off road with OS or OSM mapping.

Specs look very similar with the 1000 just having a better screen and a few more whitles and bells.

Is there any particular reason why the 1000 would be worth paying the extra for?

Any general comments on usability, reliability etc?

Reckon you've answered it yourself 🙂

I have an 800 (same screen size as the 810). It's good but a bigger/better screen would make it much better.

Only thing to note on the 1000 (other than the price!) is that the software is still not perfect judging by mates' comments. Garmin have a reputation for not quite getting their software right but then gradually improving it though so it may well be ok by now...

Ive just gone thru a similar dilemma but i realised i really only wanted mapping and routing rather than cadence heartbeat training partner etc so i went with a garmin touring and saved a fortune. Has the mapping functionality of thr 800 and the round route option of the 1000 but half the price of the 800. Im impressed with mine. I got it last week in halfords sale and got bc discount too and quidco cost me 142 all in for bundle with case and out front holder and installed maps on sd card

The 810 is a pain in the backside to operate imo. The ability to loose a ride mid-ride is frighteningly easy. If you pause it manually the option to discard the ride comes up on the screen. One press and all that data is lost.

I've got the 800 and the 1000. The screen on the 1000 is much better, not just bigger but seems higher resolution as well, OS maps are much clearer and easier to read on it.

For me it has two issues which would stop me fully recommending it.

Firstly the battery life is much worse than the 800. I've easily got 10+ hours out of my 800 but the 1000 will run down in around 6 even with the screen brightness on it's lowest setting and all the connectivity stuff turned off.

Secondly, is the size, the 800 will mount on my MTB stem but the 100 is a bit too big to mount in the same way. I use the out front mount on my road bike which is great but it always seems a bit prone to damage stuck out there on the mountain bike.

The Edge 1000 was intended to replace the 800 but I've decided to keep both, I tend to use the 800 on the MTB or for any all day epic rides and the 1000 mainly on the road bike.

I've got a 1000, the SRAM Quickview mount is great for MTBing - like a reverse out front mount, puts it over the stem.

The Bluetooth connection is a bit flakey, that's about my only complaint, works very well IMO.

I've got an 810 and it's Ace. Best bit of kit I've bought in the last year (almost)

Great for on/off road, used to loads for short/long distance and downloading others GPX tracks and making my own, and following them. I use a HRM/Cadence too...

I had a couple of issues early on but really that was to do with Connect, certainly the last software update cured mid ride crashes and lost routes.

I'd say whats the price difference? If it ain't much get the 1000.. if it's more than £200 get the 810.

I had a look at the 810 and 1000 side by side in Evans today.

1000 is big innit? Not really sure I fancy something that large stuck to my bars/stem. The 810 looks like a much more compact size which I like. For road use, the 810 would probably be my choice. I can see that the 1000s bigger screen would be useful off road if using OS/OSM mapping but probably overkill for the road.

Cheers

DB

^^^ I had those exact thoughts when looking to replace my 500. I just found the 1000 too big for my liking, although I appreciate why others would want that big screen.

The flakey bluetooth connectivity thing is common to all of the recent generation of garmins. Bit of a pain.

Its not the Garmins fault that you arent capable of using it properly..

The 810 is a great bit of kit. If you do any long, multiday rides then the 810 is probably a safer bet. The 1000 is quite power hungry in comparison. Other than that, they are much the same with the exception of the screen

Small point, but the 1000 has wifi, so it'll upload your rides automatically without being reliant on your phone connectivity. Think that's about the only functional difference now you can get segments on 810s. It'll do landscape too if that interests you.

It is big, but I personally don't find it too big - it's significantly thinner than the 705 it replaced, so lower profile. Fits on 100mm stems fine. I personally prefer having the better screen and would definitely buy the 1000 again.

Anybody any idea how the 1000 screen compares to the touring. I borrowed a 1000 for a few days in wales last week, and it was very good - but I don't really need the cadence/VP stuff. I'd like to keep the heart rate info - but the touring just seems so much better value - if the screen is as good.

1000 has a capacitive screen rather than the resistive on earlier models, means presses on the screen can be a bit iffy with thicker gloves on. Prefer the way it just pools all the sensors together rather than sensors per bike and then allows you to select different ride types each with a customised display for that type of ride.
