I've just started a new training plan, and have hit my first stumbling block. I have 7 HR zones (1,2,3a,3b,3c,4 and 5), However when I attempt to upload these zones to my Garmin Edge 500 via Garmin Connect, I get an error message stating that my device only supports 5 HR zones. I'm pretty sure that I'm stuffed (seems a bit rubbish tho!), but thought I'd ask if anyone has managed to get around this limitation?

I'm assuming 1 is recovery and 5 is maximal, or near maximal in which case HRM is pointless for Zone 5.
Set up the zones from your zone 2 upwards to 4.
The Edge 500 will show anything below Zone 2 as 0.?, so you still get a readout. Same will go for anything about Zone 4, it will still give you a readout.
