I use one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Generation-Lipstick-Sized-Portable-Technology-Black/dp/B005QI1A8C/ref=pd_cp_23_1 for my Garmin 510. Should work for the 500 as well. It doesn't put the 510 in to PC mode so it can still be used to log movement whilst charging.

Edit: can't help with your mental state being frazzled ๐Ÿ˜†

I used one of the free EE batteries on Saturday, worked a treat and charged quickly. I'd bring some tape to tape it to the bars though - I removed mine and put it in my camelbak where it got switched off ๐Ÿ™

Something that I suddenly remembered - the battery comes with a micro USB cable not a mini USB which is what the 510 uses. Not that hard to find though if the 500 also uses mini USB.

I have a spare USB to mini-USB cable so that should be fine.

You might want to check but, the 500 when plugged in to charge stops recording, I believe there is a modification required to the lead.

@benji That can happen with the 510 as well - it may well happen with all Edge units. It's pin X on the lead that needs tying to ground. Most USB cables don't do that, however the battery I linked to above certainly powers the 510 whilst it is recording so I wonder if it grounds pin X internally so that it works in the same manner.

A few moments testing will give the answer. You can always charge it whilst having a break.

I haven't experienced this myself but some users of Edge units have reported problems when recording long rides (around 12hrs of data). The simplest solution is to stop recording at some convenient point and begin a new file then stitch them together using fitfiletools.com or similar or even by editing the XML files by hand.

^^ my 800 had issues with long file, although i did once record 302km unaware of any such issues, i know just as above states save smaller files and use fit tools to join them

Can confirm this does turn your Garmin 500 off and puts into charging mode, thus stopping the ride.
