Weekend gone a bit Pete Tong already. Mrs passed her driving test a year ago but doesn't really drive anywhere on her own. Got a girls weekend in Plymouth and a 3 hour drive left her in tears this morning worrying she was going to cause a crash! Anyway, I buckled an we're now going warp speed down the motorway. So my weekend of road and mountain biking has gone out the window. As a form of bribery I'm taking my bike to Plymouth with me and noticed that there's a xc race on at Newnham. Used to love the Soggy Bum series so fancied a go again although a bit rubbish at short distance bursts (not that i'm great at log distance either).

Anyone done it before? Website says 1:30-2hrs. Any idea of the distance expected? Presumably 16-20miles. Quite fancy another race after the Dyfi and the weather seems good for it too.

Decisions decisions

No idea about the distance but I did the Newnham 60 in January and it was MUDDY, thick claggy wheel jamming stuff, and based on the rain I would guess there will be more of the same tomorrow! Still a nice place and likely to be a good course, just wish I could get down to plymouth for tomorrows race. ๐Ÿ™

Got the course on GPS so it looks good. Fully prepared for the mud. Done a fair few races there in the past but will be goo to refresh the memory before the Twentyfour12 too

It'll be great.
The Horton's are putting together better and better courses now. They seem to experiment & try new things in these Newnham xc races with the need to put on an awesome course for the 24/12 in their sights.
Yes there will be some tough climbing, Yes Newnham does get muddy, but we've had sun down here for all of Friday and today so far, so Newnham should be ok come tomorrow.

4 laps of a roughly 5k course probably.

Glad I did it, was quite a good course but though it quite technical and the virgin soil made tings quite difficult in places. Hopefully some of those tracks won't be used in the twentyfour12 otherwise they will be bloody dangerous after a 6-7hour stint.
Did manage to have a fair few stacks which was quite entertaining. One of which my saddle managed to pull my shorts down so I was mooning the spectators!
Think I prefer the longer distances but wanted to do one last race in the sport category before I move to masters.
How did you get on?

I survived just & I agree with your summary of the event. I have ridden @ Newnham Park many times & I have to say that todays course was by far the most technically challenging loop I've ever had the 'pleasure' of riding there.

Brutal climbs & squeaky bum descents with zero grip, that was a tough ride & I agree with you about the 24/12. Personally I don't think they will make it that difficult for the Bonti as it's not a short course race.

What's made it worse is that I strava'd it... wish I hadn't, the person who came 1st in the champs has absolutely annihilated me!
