What gear cables/outers do you use? and where do you buy them?

Is it worth paying the extra for ptfe coating?

Sp41 outer in a 10m roll (or as long as you want) and the Xt/xtr ptfe inners. Job done.

I noticed that the Xtr kits on crc are cheaper than 2 * the price of 2 inners, and you get all the end caps etc (and bin the short bits of sp41)

Not quite what you're after, but for interrupted runs, these are good value.

Flying Snake. from the reviews:

"There's no need to use this cable if you have full-length outer routing, as it's key features are the full length inner sleeve and light weight."

they do sound good though... i'd just use whatever is cheapest shimano outer with stainless inners.

Whatever the LBS has on a roll at the time.

No need for 3 year life as the bike will be stripped and rebuilt much more often

There's an ebay seller doing Giant's Jagwire (Jagwire manufacture for Giant among other big names) outer for £2/metre, arrived promptly and looks good. I got stainless JW inners from a different seller (£2<) and a small handful of ferrules from another.

I'll have a full length JW stainless setup for under £7 with spares for my other bikes 😀

Having seen my LBS use Clarks cheap cables I realised the inners may also be galvanised! I like to go there where possible but a Clarks/galvanised setup doesn't belong between XT parts.

Also check out Transfil's cheap sealed kit from Wiggle. £2.64 very well spent if you have gear cable stops. Works great to protect the exposed inner and is pretty easy to fit.

Shimano or Jagwire outer
Shimano inner
Cablemagic (administered with a homemade syringe...)

Whatever the LBS has on a roll + whatever the LBS has as inners. Apply liberal thin lube, put it all together, don't fret. The routing of the cable around your bike will have more of a difference to gear changing than any more money you throw at the problem. Replace inners as required. No problems in over 5 years on my HT.

I just get a length of sp41 and those teflon greased inners. since going full length cables i don't have half as many gear problems and shifting actually feels smooth for more than one muddy ride!
