I don't want to pay the £60 or so from specialized for a set of bearings so apart from KaTec where can I get my bearings from? I have a full list of the sized needed but don't know where to get them from at a good price.
If KaTec can sell his XXX bearings for £25 I must be able to buy them at that sort of price elsewhere.
I use these, you just need to know the sizes you need.Quick delivery too

i did the same thing for my epic. ebay bearing suppliers sent either incomplete sets or very basic bearings even while listing the correct ones not amused. next time for simplicity i'll go to specialized.
Find your local bearing supplier? I use forth engineering as its local to me - there is also a bearing specialist in ratho that I have used.
Why not use KaTec?
He's a legend.
KaTec does what he says on the tin, I'll give him that. 🙂
Look for a local engineering suppliers, brammer-UK are quite widespread, or they'll be called something like XXYYZZ Bearing and transmission in yellow pages.
Most I've dealt with have been really helpfull and usualy not much more than ebay (where the chances of getting an SKF bearing where they even spell SKF incorectly is quite high!). Cost me £25 for a set of bearings for my front hub, not bad when the SKF list price was nearer £80. Did the same for my hollowtech BB, and you can get them on the day without having to wait for postage.
Hey, is it the pitch or the Enduro? I suppose it has to be the enduro because I don't list a pitch kit?
I just got my new range of bearings into the country at the beggining of the year, I designed them and then had them manufactured to my design, I'm not sure you'll find better bearings than these. However I wish you goodluck in your hunt.
Will you be servicing the frame yourself to save money? 😯
Have you tried these guys - use them whenever I need something....

+1 for KaTec, I was sceptical at first but the product is good, service absolutely first class (Ive had a set in my Meta and in brother's Stumpjumper) and he doesnt even spout that much bollocks on here any more 😉 (oh hello Kael, didnt see you up there 😆 )
Aye katec bearings are pretty good and a nice guy try and support him when you can

Brilliant, been waiting on these for so long. SKF or INA been on the phone yet? I am sure they will take all you can 'manufacture'.
Hey iain1775 you can forget about those bearing, they will last forever, OK not forever but a long time.
That said, you should remove the old grease and add new stuff after 2.5 to 3 years. Get's a bit stanky and of course hardens over time, short term, it's better than rust but over the long term has some drawbacks.
I'm working on a new tool as well, very simple as always so riders can clean out and service their frame bearings. If they have bearings worth reconditioning that is.
Mate let us know how you get on with the bearings 😀 , I for one would be curious to know what bearings you get, how you weather proof them and how long they last, for some odd reason I'm very interested in bearings.
The nicer you guys are to me! the more on gaurd I am, not sure why that is? but if you think I believe any of you or am letting down my guard, you are so wrong!!!!
Ridefree! everyone!!!
Kaesae - i have a recently aquired epic, only a matter of time before i need new bearings, so may as well get some in
what's the deal?

SKF and INA are brands, they manufacture the bearings, they don't actually buy bearings, they sell them ❓
Also, they sell them through distributors, for example accorn industries for SKF and shaeffler for FAG / INA.
SKF

INA/FAG

To my knowledge however! they don't actually make bearings specific to the MTB industry. Also in a lot of sizes they can be quite expensive and will of course still suffer from rusting.
Did I mention that I stock SKF, FAG / INA bearings? aah well might as well put it in now!
Really what's needed is for a long lasting, budget bearing and for people to be able to service their own frames. So simple tools and being shown how to do the work, is a good idea to or at least I think so.
I believe this because it keeps the frames in circulation and from a valuable resource getting lost and also ensures people get the most out of thier saddle time.
Are you still holding a grudge SV? surely there is room in your heart for forgiveness 🙂
Wouldn't want you turning into one of those bitter, deranged, stalker types, now would we ❓
First you contact me via email, first thing I ask is how will you be fitting them.
Then I either supply you with the tools and show you how to fit the bearings, or you have them fitted by someone.
The epic is a very easy frame to change the bearing on, however it can be one of the hardest frames to strip.
Firstly before I sell you the bearings, I will work with you to strip the frame and check the actual condition.
Sometimes all you need to do is fill the bearings with great, sometimes a complete replacement, the trick is in evaluating the actual condition.
I wouldn't buy bearings unless you need them, that said do you want to check the bearings?

As I remember it you were having difficulty explaining your engineering rationale and got a bit upset. I am surprised that you have had bearings manufactured to your design when you obviously do not know what you are talking about. Please spare us the picture of that pile of used bearings and the sales talk. If you want to advertise take out an ad with STW.
to be fair K is right that no one makes mtb specific bearings (bar King and maybe SKF for their bb) and that IMO is why they are so crap.
Yes SV you are quite right, I see the logic of what you are saying, I talked a factory into manufacturing a bearing design, but they couldn't understand me ❓
I know it can be hard to follow what I'm saying at times, but do try to keep up!
If you are referring to my Bearing, bearings, bearings, Who thinks they know the score? thread or similar threads. All I can say is, fuzzy wuzzy is a woman.
http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/bearing-bearings-bearings-who-thinks-they-know-the-score
I don't think too many people where taking that seriously SV and yes a lot of people put forward theories, like buy cheap bearings remove the seals and fill them with grease, a lot of impressive arguments but none seemed to incorporate all the factors involved in what was required in a bearing.
However since you claim to know about bearings, let's here your evaluation of what is required ❓
I for one can't wait to here this, all ears sunshine, lets be hearing it!
😯
Let the thread do the talking eh? 😉

I forgot about BETD but they are still £50. Bloody 4 bar I knew I should have got a single pivot!
kaesae what is wrong wlth me servicing my own frame?
Anybody used these guys?

Nothing, I would advise that you do it yourself, the point of my post was to see if you wanted too ❓ 😀
I do everything I can to my bike. I enjoy it almost as much as riding. and as a bonus its cheaper!

Aah that brings back fond memories, last year when I had a slipped disc in my lower back and a protruding disc in my upper back and had to work to pay the bills also to pay for private medical care.
The lovely people from STW, came over to cheer me up and send me emails of support and best wishes.
That charmer tracknico even contacted me a few other times, just to [s]waste my time[/s] cheer me up from his work 😯
Which coincidentaly was a bike shop that did work for free ❓ , rather than charging money for it 😯 . If only we knew where tracknico worked ❓
Aah those where the days, constant agonizing pain, exhaustion, sleepless nights and then the ray of sunshine that is the STW massive arrived and everything was so much better.
Thanks SV, now I know you love me!
Yeah I think everyone should, a lot of bike shops have the tools and skill but people make mistakes.
Doing it yourself means that you can make sure everything is done right, and if anything does go wrong there isn't any financial incentive to cover it up.
I've serviced a lot of specialized frames, if you let me know how your changing the bearings I'll tell you any of my techniques if they're easier.
Having met Kael and had bearings from him a few times now(different frames, hubs as they do last well!)i would def say give him a go, he's
a good guy and is really into bearings 😀
Someone helping out with people servicing their bikes seems like a decent bloke.....
Whereas someone bringing up an old thread (or 2) which got a bit heated seems a bit of a bully to me!
When I need some new bearings for my frame I'll be giving this chap a go
here here!
i find he has a passion for all things MTB, he also sent some free bearings with 1st class post because 'he likes giving something back to mtb'ers' is that really the sign of a tossa or what ever you may like to call him??
cant be bothered to read the whole linked thread thing, i very much assume its bully boy tactics and yet again people jumping on the bandwagon....
i for one would gladly buy bearings off the guy, hes seems genuinley a nice chap, and has a passion for the bearings....
Kael -
Meta - 9 months including some pretty horrible mud and snow and still going like new (although I gave up trying to fit the main pivot bearings so they are still sat in the shed and original outer ones where re packed with grease)
Stumpjumper - Brother in Law stripped and changed bearings no problems but only been out on it a couple of times so far
Regards the original thread that didnt need bringing back up. Yes bullyboy STW tactics, Kael to be fair tried to give as good as he got but when its the STW massive against one he didnt stand much of a chance. I originally thought he ccame across very badly and sounded like a bit of an idiot, I'll be honest. But since speaking to him myself outside of STW I now realise he is actually just a nice hardworking guy with a passion, and that shouldnt be knocked
Try his bearings, they are equal to anything else out there but cheaper, thats all that needs saying really. None of this theory b0ll0cks, this is better than that etc. if something is cheap, does the job and is offered with A1 customer service what more do you need?
