Has any one got some tips on set up for this bike??? starting to doubt if I've got the correct type. At the small cog the cage is VERY close to the tyre and at the other end of it's range it knocks up against the chain ring

HEEEEELLLLLPPPPPP!

things to check:
1) have you put the right number of spacers on the BB cups if you are using shimano cranks? 68mm = 2x Drive Side, 1x NDS. 73mm = 1x DS, 1x NDS.

2) The mech cage should never hit the outer chainring if it is mounted high enough up the seat tube. It should clear the teeth by a few mm

3) What part of the front mech is getting close to the tyre? The cage or the cam arm? If the latter, maybe try a conventional mech (not a topswing) and remove the cam for bottom pull as you're only using top pull.

1 spacer is enough....
have you adjusted the mech so that the inner plate is just missing the inner ring, when in the inner ring...
