DO NOT USE CRC!!!

I just used them on Saturday last week. It was a debit card i had never used before and the next day £400 was taken and then £250 on the monday. Cleaned out my current account.

It had to have been CRC because the fraud was in sterling and I havent purchased anything else that would have been in sterling. All my other transactions are in Euro. They said it wasnt skimmed and cloned either so it was from the internet the details must have been gained. I havent used my debit card with anyone else online.

Be careful. Paypal only in future.

I advise everyone who has used them in the last few days.

I too was a victim of the CRC scam a few weeks ago, but I have to ask if you run a regular virus and malware scan on your PC?

Paypal is pretty solid, so long as your computer is secure. They pass a token to crc, and not any of your details.

Yup, computer was literally just scanned and there is no malware on it. No one other than CRC has had access to my debit card details. Ive never used it online before and the card details were taken online.

What's the problem with using a debit card on line ?
I use paypal whenever possible, otherwise credit card.
My local council won't accept either of those for council tax payments, only debit cards.
What's the risk ?

It is more the impact on you that implies debit cards are bad online. How mcuh pain would you suffer if your current account was closed or cleaned out due to fraud? Loads. With a credit card the pain is delayed and you get warned it is coming so you can sort it out. Having your debit card refused at Tesco checkout is no fun at all.

So the ONLY transaction you've made with THAT card was with CRC? If not it could have been anywhere.

as robbo said, plus there is more protection buying with a credit card. I have a nice shiny new unused debit card as I'm halfway through switching current accounts, but no intention of testing it on crc I'm afraid!

I now have a couple of current accounts and just maintain one for online purchasing thus protecting the others from this (very small) risk.
But the one time my details were skimmed, 8yrs ago, it was a credit card and not on CRC

HTH

Isn't it about time CRC stopped taking credit card details and stuck with Paypal until the resolve the issue?

They're looking pretty unscrupulous in my opinion as they know they have a problem. Whilst I'm sure they are dealing with it, they are effectively allowing it to continue.

interesting you say the transactions where in sterling because most of the previous fraud was in euro. seems strange that an online retailer that was hit hard so recent, would be an easy target so soon. like has been said just use paypal.

So debit cards are no more at risk than credit cards then, it's just the consequences are more inconvenient. Is that right ?
Thinking about it a bit more, I pay my car tax on line by debit card too.
I just assume that local and national government websites will have better security than independent retailers.

serious over reaction by the forum.

it proper sucks to be done over but you are one in millions of perfectly good transactions that take place every day.

Government IT systems being up to scratch? That's quite a bold assumption to make, tbh

Why oh why do people still use their Debit cards on-line.

Use a credit card, if something happens you can sort it with the bank while you can still pay your mortgage/rent etc from your current account, (you know the money that you actually have).

I know it's easy to blame a single source but once your packet of data hit's the internet cloud its in bandit land.

People also assume that their virus software will actually work and pick up every malware/virus/key logger. THEY DON'T FFS!

In order for CRC to trade they will be under very strict PCI compliancy. If they aren't then they wouldn't be able to trade.

I doubt it's CRC. But let the usual STW crap continue.

Happy regular user of CRC here. Been using debit cards there for 10+ years with no problem. Could just have been lucky I guess...

Just wanted to add a little balance.

Some debit cards (Visa IIRC), have as much protection as a credit card.

Nothing like dunning with pitchforks eh!!

Do you also forward those e-mails at work about people getting their heads blown off as they used a mobile phone while it was charging?

Did your bank confirm the CRC fraud to you or are you just making a great leap?

There is misinformation appearing on this thread (again); Chunky, CRC admitted the last wave of fraud was at their end; my debit card has the same security benefits as a credit card; one fraud doesn't constitute a re-occurrence of mass fraud.

I have just shopped with CRC again for the first time since I was defrauded, just to get my £30 credit. I used a debit card without Paypal. My principles don't allow me to use Paypal for reasons too long and boring to go into - remember I wont be out of pocket by any fraud, and have multiple accounts so am not too put out by losing a card for a few days.

Besides, I'm currently working in the trade so no longer need CRC, as I get trade prices 😀

CRC's first stance when this all came out, was "it can't be us, we have blah blah security". And Grumpy Mark popped his head up and said it was unfounded criticism of a good advertiser.

Then they admitted it was and what they had done to reassure prospective customers; which was a bold step.

It might not be CRC this time, but it doesn't look good with the circumstantial evidence. I've stuck to Paypal since.

Yes, with a debit card it's your money, with a credit card it isn't.
