Found today - An absolute rake of energy gel wrapper thingies strewn all over the sides of the trail, pretty much all the way up the climb to Minch Moor. Theres no need, ever, at any point to just to toss these things when you've finished with them...stick them back in the pocket you presumably pulled them out of whilst entertaining fantasies of being a seasoned Tour pro.
Not a rant, a perfectly rational statement of fact.
TBF - that's much MUCH rarer than at the near neighbour. Still a shame.
Was there an event / race recently (I assume the CRC marathon clean up after themselves)?
That's maybe why it was grating me so much. It doesn't matter where you are(obv I don't refer to anyone in particular) take your rubbish home!
I think shops like ours should do a packaging trade in.
In fact, let's do it.
Bring all your old packaging back and get 5p for every wrapper against new gels.
Bosh.
Another great idea from TBC... Could've made a tidy(badoom tish) profit had I started my collection today!
thebikechain - great idea.
how many wrappers for a free energy gel?
you do realise that by doing that you'll get a load of vagrants and tramps hanging around at trail centres and races asking you for your energy gel wrappers.

Ace, dodging vagrants will provide a new challenge for all those who claim trail centres are too easy.
I imagine a quick look on Strava to see who was on Minch Moor climb/descent today could help kick start the witch-hunt.
who deserve more hate? energy gel wrapper tossers or Strava warriors?
Nah I think there may have been an event on some time recently. Was a big 70km marker just before you get out of the wee trees onto the moor...
And I may have been a Strava warrior today - so I guess that's my position on the moral high ground relinquished!
I was similarly unimpressed on the Etape Caledonia. Lovely countryside with gel wrappers all over the shop.
It does save so much weight of course. So totally justifiable really.
How many years for one of those to break down ?
5p? TBC better take on more staff for the rush..
Stealth-spam ftw ๐
Fair play TBC but I fear people who drop their energy gel wrappers also drop their crisp packets, coke bottles etc anywhere they see fit. Will take more than 5p off for these idiots to change their ways. ๐
Well it's a start.
Agreed that people shouldn't need a prompt but its worth a go.
It IS a start and a very good one!
I would be really interested in finding out how many people take advantage compared to how many energy gels are sold so an update in the future would be good.
I've started picking the occasional one or two up and stuffing them in my rubbish pocket in my bag. Makes no odds really as it all goes in the bin at the end. Let's all try to do the same. Maybe the perpetrators will eventually be shamed in to not dumping them but that's probably just me being optimistic.
Irritating though isn't it...
I hate that. Did you see the huge pile of rubbish at the top of glentress a few weeks ago? I think the FC must have gathered it all for collection, was pretty bad. There is someone who dumps their lucozade bottles in the same place in the Pentlands too (sure its the same person). Inner tubes in the trees at trail centres are a weird one too...
I noticed all the wrappers lying about while up there yesterday, all the way up the climb, totally boils my piss, why can't people take them away with them?
I think the climb may have been used for the Selkirk Merida a few weeks back, only event I can think of around here that would have had a 70Km marker. Bloody XC riders, Downhillers would never leave a mess like that!
Nice one Mark, if people can take a gel out of a pocket, open it with their teeth then neck it and just put the empty back in their pocket, its got to be worth a go.
yes its a sad state of affairs .people should take responsibility.
well done the b/c i like the idea.
reminds me of the old ben shaws, you used to save your lid & get 20p off your next botttle, god only knows what happened to the large glass bottles as he (pop man) never seemed keen on collecting these .
we were at inners on sunday/monday & had to pull someone up at a stop who throw there rubbish in the hedge .pissed me right off.
p.s glentress is a bit of a dump in places im afarid to say .the car park looked like a football match had just taken place :-P.
round by us they cleaned the bottles, re-filled and re-sold them.. kinda weird you got your deposit for just the tops :/
We had a local juice factory in the town I grew up in, a few of us realised how easy it was to climb over the fence into the factory to steal empty bottles and take them round the corner to the chippy when we needed money. This set us in good stead for helping ourselves at the local Brewery a few years later too ๐
Is that jelly baby holding its knob? It looks angry too. Is there a new adult range out. Scary.
Went over to Lee cragg/quarry thingy with some new riding 'friends' a wee while ago. Just got over the moor using the newish pathway linking the two, sat down to wait for group for one lad to take out a gel neck it and proceed to throw the wrapper and declare 'its lovely up ere innit'. To which I responded 'twas' and picked up his wrapper.............not for one moment do I think that I've made an impression on him.....it didn't seem to even register.. ๐
Can't have been v fit if they needed energy gel for that climb, I did it on a few jellybabies which may I add require no
wrapping.
