[Closed] forks

So, I am a little naive when it comes to bike parts and standards. I am ok with a spanner and have 3/4 of a new bike stashed in my parts bun 😉

I fancy either an evil sov or a blue pig, - Compare and contrast by all means....

The actual question is what forks would go with them, if I wanted to take advantage of the current crc sale what are my options and how does one know if a frame or forks are tapered......

Well I put Fox Van 36s on my sovereign. I just never got on with air forks or lightweight forks (must have broken 5 or 6). Not cheap but been v happy with the fork and the bike.

air.

they're easier to set the 'spring' rate, and they're lighter.

as for pig vs sovereign, they're more or less similar, but the geometry is a bit different.

see if you can try them both, and get the one you like. cross your fingers that you prefer the pig because it's about £200 less expensive.

Yes, I did notice that....

Was going for a PIG originally but then started thinking this is a bike I want / need to stick with for a while so didn't want to end up regretting the decision.

The Sov always gets very positive reviews.

always found it a faff setting spring rates on air forks. Quite happy to turn a big preload knob on the fork even whilst riding - compared to carrying a shock pump everywhere (and keeping it clean) I prefer coil. Just my opinion, always prefer simple to complex.

Tapered forks have are 1 1/8th inch at top crown of headset and 1.5 inch at the lower crown. You need either a 1.5 inch headtube like on some Ragleys and a headset to fit. Or a bike with a tapered head tube that is 1 1/8th at top and 1.5 at bottom.

Looking at the pic of the Sovereign it looks like a standard 1 1/8th head tube.

If you are trying to land a bargain build the advantage of the 1.5 inch head tube on the Ragley would be the large discounts available on 1.5 inch forks like these

so do pigs 🙂 - mine's ace!

(insert normal 'Ragley-geometry not appreciated by everyone' disclaimer here)

2 questions:

1) have you tried solo-air forks? - they make it really easy.

2) which forks have a pre-load knob on them? 😕
