Haven't been for years but interested in returning having read a report in MBR.I have a question , the new Verderers Trail being 11 miles do you really need a guide for 9 miles of hard to find singletrack to extend loop ?Thing is the guide said it's worth it for a few extra quid .The "few extra quid " is actually £72 !!!!!!!But is it like Swinley where you need a local to get the best out of a visit ?

The Verderers trail is barely 7 miles long! You could add in the fodca trail (or whatever it's called now) for a few more miles and then just go exploring the area. It's pretty easy to pick up bits of the enduro course as well which offers better riding than either of the above, imo.

I don't get down lots, but would be happy to show you around one Sunday morning if you like.

The £72 is just for a half day too, £120 for full day 🙂 Which isn't a lot of money to hire a professional person's services. To be fair, that cost would normally be shared between a group.

But, one of the great things about the STW community is that wherever you're heading to, there will always be someone on here happy to show you round their patch. Let us know when you're visiting and one or more of us will join you and show you some of the best bits 8)

Bit of a hijack, but is there a website that I can download PDF's of the routes in FoD? Something similar to whats available for Afan, Cwmcarn and Brechfa on the Forestry Commission Wales website?

just go explore and save yourself some cash, there's plenty to find. Otherwise tag along with some others, us foresters are friendly folk. 😀

Yea, I read that as smiths had neither Dirt or ST, couldn't get over the idea of paying for a guide, I thought that was supposed to be the point of MBR route guides!

Spend the money on an OS map. You will then realise that the cycle centre and the marked loops are in one sector defined by roads and as long as you do not cross tarmac you cannot get lost. Just head down to the carpark.
Do the Verderers first as it gets you to the top easily and can be silly fun at the end. Chuck in the Freeminer trail and you have now had a look around. Then go out agin and follow your nose.
Don't cross a road and you will be happy for a day or 2.
Its so easy.

Yes! although as others have said to get to the proper good stuff you need a local.. don't just stick to verders it won't be a true representation of what the forest has to offer

If you're into Bridleways and fields No, if you're into Singletrack fun then I can keep you occupied long enough to make it worth the trip down and then some!
