Both

SPD's for flater stuff (local rides, bridel ways etc), Flats with 5:10's for anything rocky or were wheels may (will) leave the floor.

Thinking about it more, the only "wrong" answer is those stupid slippery platform SPDs.

Flats

Tried SPDs and in advance I read every tip about unclipping quickly. Unfortunately I didn't find out how to clip IN. Every ride was very frustrating as I spent ten minutes at that start of each section trying to get into the farking things so I swapped back to flats after a month.

and another thing...........

spd + rock = bent mechanism and an awquard ride home

flats + rock = no problem (occasional pin loss excepted)

not always. i bent a V8 axle to about 30 degrees from normal. made pedalling home awkward.

anyhow. flats all the way, don't mind riding clipped in but flats are just easier.

Flats

used to ride spds (12 years) but my knee got boogered (football), flats are more fun for riding.

only thing i miss is lifting the back end up without any effort.
