A mate has flattened his rear wheel and was told he needs a new rim. Mavic X717 silver a couple of years old, used with Magura H33 IIRC. SO, does he need a new rim or is there a way of un-flattening the spot? The spoke directly there was loose by some 3mm, I don't know if it makes any difference though.

if it is just a bit out of round / gone eggshaped you can sometimes true it out. If the rim is actually bent so as to be flat in one area then a new rim is needed.

It's out of shape, properly flattened with the rim's profile "improved" on some 3 inches.

I have improved a properly flatted rim but it did involve multiple blocks of wood, releasing the spoke tension and beating the rim back into shape. Not recommended and can easily split.
