[#3177700]

Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my 100mm travel FS bike, Iron horse bootleg, to 120mm to pudh out head angle etc.

I am stuck between weather to get a fixed 120 or a travel udjustable fork i.e U turn 90-120.

I do agressive XC and some races and Black red trail centre.

Does anyone have any experience of a similar change, any advise appreciated.

Cheers

I do like the U-Turn system & have three RS fork with the system, which I do use the U-turn on. Though the fork I'd like the most at the moment is the Reba Team/RTL Ti 120mm which is a fixed travel... I'd live with the fixed position on this fork, as the performance (dual flow rebound) will be better then my standard race model U-turns & it has a 20mm axle...

I must mention I only 'ever' use the U-turn to dial the travel down my 3 turns, maybe 10mm which is enough to tame the front end on the differing bikes I had, IME. So I doubt I'd like the newer Dual position rockshox's, as it would take the front end down too low for my liking.

Is that a DW-Link bike?
If so, don't bother with height adjustable forks. Just more faff, more to go wrong, heavier and the bike doesn't need them as the back end shouldn't sag down on climbs anyway.

I found I always forgot to adjust the fork at the right time - so climbed with along fork or descended with a short one.

A bit different but I have a 456 with 140mm forks on. I got U turn because I though I'd wind them down for xc riding.

I never need to. The U turn is another thing to be serviced and on the model year I got it knocks a bit when you do wind them down. I wish I'd saved the money and gone for the normal ones. Same for the remote lock out. Top of the fork would have been fine. And as TJ pointed out when I do wind them down I forget to wind them bacj out again.

For me in the future simplicity all the way.

I guess there is two camps on this: those who use it regularly and those who forget it's there. Personally I have U-Turn Rebas on my Flux (DW-link!) and use it all the time. In fact all my bikes have travel adjust forks.

One of the reasons I like travel adjust is I can suffer a bad back if the bars aren't set to the right height on the majority of my riding...I find the bar height is quite lower though for descending so for the descents the travel adjust is useful for raising the front a bit with the plus of giving me a bit of extra travel.

Its not just me then TJ? Phew ๐Ÿ™‚

Did a belter t'other week. Left my forks locked out as i launched down a really rocky descent. There was a horrible crack then the forks literally started rattling about. I'd sheared an Obit XL11 headset clean in half

OOPS!

haha, I did this too, down Minton Batch at the Long Mynd. I thought it seemed a lot bumpier and more difficult than I remembered, then a sheep walked out in front of me, I touched the brake and was off in a flash. Snakebitten innertube and a very sore and bleedy knee, I think I got off lightly TBH, lesson learnt...

cheers for all the comments, food for thought.
Forks I am looking at is the 2010 Team reba U turn, or 2012 RLT 120 fixed. I can get both for same price, both unused.
I think the U turn has dual flow rebound, but the 2012 RLT does not, this may also sway my decision, dont think I can stretch to the cost of a RLT Ti, wish I could.

Stanley, No DW link on my bike, single pivot design.

I have a DW link Pivot Firebird with a 36 TALAS on it.
The adjust mechanism failed regularly so that the forks would get stuck in the extended (160mm) position.
I got sick of servicing it so just left them there.
You adjust to climbing soon enough.
I don't bother with travel adjust any more.
More to go wrong and heavier.
I just like riding rather than faffing with propedal levers, fork adjust or seatpost height.

If you look at a U-turn spring, there really isn't anything to go wrong.
