Hi

I am looking to upgrade my footwear and I ahve always prefered flat pedals. I have been having a peek at the five ten range. Can anyone reccommend them. are they worth the money?

thanks

never mind all the stickiest stuff about them.
they are THE warmest comfiest trainers you will ever wear.
worn em thru the ice spell for the last 2 week, never had cold feet once.

It's true, they are also warm but the main reason to buy them is the grip on any decent flat pedals.

Put it this way, I moved back from SPD's to flats after trying Five Tens on flats. All the advantages, no downsides unless you are a pure XC whippet.

Must admit, was out in a blizzard on the 19th and my feet were fine. However, they do get heavy and soggy if it's wet. Under the insole also looks suspiciously like cardboard! I hope someone can tell me different. if not, I don't imagine they'll survive too many soakings.

Never worn them on flats but have worn nothing but them as general shoes for about the last 10 years, firstly as approach shoes for what they're intended but they're so bloody comfy I ended up wearing them all the time. a few different syles as well. Are pricey but I find they last way longer than anything else i've worn

as said they are comfortable and warm although i feel that they look huge when i am wearing mine

i have the older style and they take an age to dry when wet although i believe that the newer ones dry much quicker

all in all a great shoe

I don't have any 5.10 riding shoes but I do have some hiking shoes which have the same stealth rubber sole and I've worn them for short periods on the bike.

I don't understand how they are so grippy, but they just are. With my normal riding shoes I can adjust foot position just by twisting my foot, but with the 5.10s it's very difficult to move your foot unless you actually lift it off the pins and place it down again.

You won't find anything better for flat pedals - that simple really.

A fair range of shoes/boots available now too.

As an alternative, I wear these-

They're cheaper, just as grippy but are a bit more weatherproof with that flap- I wear them on really nasty days and am fine. They also come with a stiffening plate to go in the sole if you ride XC, or just prefer a bit more efficient power transfer.

They're one of my top 3 bike purchases this year.

Yep, the midsole on mine totally disintegrated in about a year. I recently replaced them with Shimano AM40's. I find these almost as grippy, and have the inserts fitted so they are considerably stiffer than the fivetens. That may or may not suit you, but I prefer them.

They're very good. But, not as good as the hype. Yep, they're incredibly sticky but for most riding, thta doesn't make any real difference to me. It's a bit like putting track day tyres on a family hatchback and only ever driving to Tesco ๐Ÿ˜‰ If you've got decent footwork and decent pedals, then a decent skate shoe like a typical pair of Vans has more than enough grip for most use anyway, so my 5 10s just give me more than more than enough. Maybe if I was downhilling, or less used to flats, I'd feel differently but I learned to ride in the 80s, back when pedals were made of soap ๐Ÿ˜‰

My gripe with them is that they're just not that nice as shoes- they're not great to walk in, and not especially well put together, especially considering the price. And they soak up water like bloody sponges, not so nice in winter. IMO the sole is really all they have going for them, though that's a big selling point. Mine are wearing out at a ridiculous rate too considering they get worn for maybe 4 hours every couple of weeks, whereas the old Vans I use to commute in and for most XC riding were old and worn before I even started using them on the bike, but still hold up better.

But having said all that, I do like them, considering getting my ancient Vans resoled with Stealth rubber as well. What I find is that where they help is where my skill/ability runs out- I wore mine at Fort William becase I knoew I'd be pushing my ability and confidence, and I wore them at Kirroughtree because I knew that by the end I'd be shattered and likely to screw up. The extra stick gives a bit of a safety net, and a nice confidence inspiring feeling.

I think they've still got to make a really great riding shoe, rather than a pretty ordinary riding shoe with a great sole. It shouldn't be that hard, a pair of vans with a bit of waterproofing, some toe protection and a stealth sole would make me a happy man.

If they keep my feet warm as some of you say I might consider them soon....
