I have an opportunity to head to Aix-les-Bains in midsummer for a few weeks on the cheap: http://tinyurl.com/cumshpg
Was planning on taking my bike with me and doing some riding while i'm there. I've never been to the Alps before in any capacity and was looking for any advice on whether Aix-les-Bains is a good place to use as a base for riding. I'd be taking my motor so am prepared to drive a bit from the town itself.
Would appreciate your thoughts. Anyone been there? Ridden there? Hired bikes? Know of good guides or routes? Bueller? Anyone.....?
Never been there specifically, but you're within an hour of most French and Swiss riding meccas. You're also surrounded by big hills, so there's bound to be something.
There is some great riding in the local area, around the Bauges pre-Alps. There is even a wee bike-park at a small ski resort just south of Chambery. From Chambery, you can easily get a train (if you don't have a car) to Bourg Saint Maurice and directly link up with the Les Arcs lift system.
Otherwise, Les Deux Alpes / Alpe d'Huez / La Grave, Les Arcs + all the rest of the Tarentaise, the Beaufortain, La Clusaz, etc. are all easy drives. Chamonix, Portes du Soliel, etc. little bit further bit still doable in a day.
