Keilder Duathlon this Sunday. 5 mile run, 12.5 mile ride, 4.5 mile run.
First timer, my plan is to run and ride in my tights and Goretex
Trail running shoes. Does this sound like a sensible plan or is it worth swapped socks and shoes, etc..
Any advice on food?
I am in no danger of winning it and will be on a fat bike.
What shoes do you normally ride/run in?
These trail shoes for running, flats for riding. I've even managed to ride in my Crocs once when I forgot my shoes so I should be ok, it's only a blue trail.
I wouldn’t worry about food, decent breakfast a couple of hours before. Have an energy drink if you must.
Cheers chaps
2 pairs of running shoes, one for each run so they can both be set up for a quick getaway
Running after riding really hurts and just feels wrong.
Or it did for me after a 5/40/5km road one.
It was also an incredible head wind that almost stopped you dead on the bike for about 40% of the ride.
It was 4 years ago and I've nearly forgotten the pain enough to consider entering another one 😯
Practice a short run bike run, 2km run, 4km bike, 2km run will be enough to get the feeling.
As mentioned above the change from running to riding can be moreover painful than expected.
Have fun.
Too late for practice it's on Sunday! I did try a bike/run a few weeks back, felt odd but not as hard as I'd been led to believe but thats expectation for you.. 😆
See you there Mugboo, I'll be on a black Trek Fuel Ex, maybe 650+,maybe 29er, not sure yet. Off road trainers for the run for me and normal MTB shoes for the ride part. Dry sealskins at each transition is my secret plan. Otherwise wearing winter running tights for the whole lot, 12 miles on the bike isn't enough to make a padded short that essential. Probably wearing a bright yellow Cleveland Wheelers gilet as well to irritate the hardcore runners.
I've only done triathlons, but unless it's really wet, I'd just stick to the same socks. Definately worth investing in elastic laces for the running shoes though. If the ride is only 12mile or so, I'm sure running kit will be fine, although triathlon type cycling shorts are fine to run in.
I do an offroad duathlon of similar duration, I just wear the same trail runners throughout (brooks cascadia which have a reasonably stiff sole, I'd probably use lighter but more flexy inov8 roclites for a purely running trail race). You can easily lose a couple minutes faffing about in transition, so I'd only bother with different sets if there were longer distances involved where having optimal shoes will matter. Time lost in transition isn't important though if you're not fussed about placing. I have an energy drink/bar laid out at transition that I'll take a quick glug/bite from while exiting, and perhaps an energy gel on person. I generally don't bother with waterproofing other than vaselining my feet, but then my racing season is April - October when cold wet feet aren't as critical.
I did a bike/run/bike over the summer and used running shoes with toe clips and straps which worked fine. Double change (and would have had to carry them on the bike) would have wasted more time than any benefit from better cycling shoes.
Are you hoping to win?
If not just go and have fun and take the first run at a slower pace than you think you could.
