Dear STW,

I think I'm suffering from a near fatal episode of smuggititis. Sat in the Qatar Premium Lounge at CDG, awaiting the first of three flights that'll get me to Mandalay. Somewhere below, slathered in "FRAGILE" stickers, in which I have no faith at all, my bagged fat bike (this one). I'm off for a month to run a project at the World Heritage site of Halin, during which I'll be spending many sweaty happy hours riding north-south transects in the hunt for things wot interest me. I'm taking the fat bike to combat the very sandy soil. In those big @ss 4.8" tyres will be about a gallon of Stan's, to fend off the incessant thorn strikes. Three other members of my team are biked so far, all 29ers but they don't need to do transects. And there is a bar in the village. 7th. Heaven.

I'm also going to be trying out on of the prototype Headkayse flexible helmets (in bright pink). The helmet is currently wrapped around the Cube's headtube as part of my defensive set up. I like the idea of a helmet I can just rinse off after use, without having to wait for the foam inserts to dry out.

Wish me Godspeed and I hope to send some piccies!
Gaidong

No pics so far. Just sat in Doha feeling very bloated. I wonder how the bike's getting on...

The bike's going to Australia and will get to you a week before you go home!
