looking at both these, and was wondering if the extra cost & weight of the maxx-d is worth it over the toro for offroad use?

Will be using a joystick mk2 on the lid too if that makes any difference?

Depends. Do you go nightriding to ride in the dark or do you go nightriding because it's the only time you get out? I rarely have my maxx-d on full power.

I have a Toro which I use with or without a Joystick on my helmet.
The Toro is fine for my usual night rides on familiar trails. I've used a MaxxD and it's much brighter but I've never found the Toro lacking.

As for commuting and night-road riding then the Toro is plenty bright enough although I find it useful to use the Joystick angled up so I can see far enough ahead on the rare occasions I'm going fast enough that I need to see further ahead.

I use the Toro bar mounted and Joystick helmet mounted. As just said fine for familiar trails. I'll be replacing that set up with a proper spot(10w) for the helmet and flood(20w) for the bars system. I'll be looking at Ay-ups next!

Get the most powerful you can afford, you won't regret it if you like to hammer the singletrack...

Is the toro the same beam pattern and the Diablo? i have an old MaxxD and a new DIablo, they are both the same power but the MaxxD seams to have a better spread, so as said above the Toro/Diablo are great for stuff you know, but could be better for new stuff (tho a helmet light helps fix this).

Im a big exposure fan, but have to say the reviews/beam-pics of the new hope bar mount (R4?) seems to have a better beam pattern than anything exposure have at the moment.

if you are using a joystick. may i suggest the Strada. the fresnel lens gives a nice spread for peripheral vision with a central spotlight. i use mine without the helmet light and it is great. it's not just about lumens. beam pattern counts a lot.

and for the alternative perspective.......I have a new 2012 Maxx D which I run in combination with a 2011 Joystick. I run them both on full power for night rides, as I am usually out for around 2.5 hrs, so loads of battery life. The Maxx D does look quite bulky on the bars, but it has been fine with a few tumples so far.

Actually, ignore me. Apparently the R4 is similar to the new Maxx-D....

so close to pulling the trigger on this one, swaying towards the Toro at the monent as its £50 cheaper and less bulky on the bars, but will I regret not getting a Maxx-D? I can afford either, so thats not really an issue.

How does the beam pattern compare between the 2012 toro and Maxx-d? I may also use the light for commuting if that makes any difference, but already have a joystick mk.2 and a flash/flare set.

Someone help me make a decision for gods sake!!! I am incapable!!!!

strada. You may want to commute with it too, but it is better off road.

If you really want a Toro, buy mine and then I can buy a Maxx-D 🙂

tbh I find the beam too narrow - I run it in conjunction with a Joystick on the helmet.

so the MAXX-D has a more floody beam than the Toro? So the Maxx-d is better for single track?

organic - Toro is generally marketed/recommended as being a road light for night riding in unlit/dark areas , whereas the Maxx D is aimed squarely for off road use 'in general terms'. The Maxx D is more of a flood by a long way.

Either of them will burn out your joystick, however if you are riding off road in twisty stuff the Maxx D will give a better spread than the Toro. Bulky on the bars doesn't really matter - if you are taking a bad enough tumble you will bust either of them and apart from that it doesn't get in your way. Combining either with a Joystick gives you some light in the direction you are looking, which may not be the same way as the bars are pointing..
