Talking to someone the other day I was trying to explain why riding at night is fun, and why 24hr racing is. I'm not so bloody minded as to not concede that it is hard or dangerous but I couldn't seem to come up with a better answer then 'its really really fun'.
Can anyone summerise briefly?
it's hard and dangerous = fun
Got me on the 24 hour thing maybee if in a team but solo no thanks
Night riding now that is fun alone in the middle of nowhere in the dark listening to strange noises with only a little light (ok huge light) to guide you over and around the obstacles ....whats not to like then?
PS if you do it around Rivvy you get the added delight of meeting doggers ... they go a litle shy when you light them up for some reason
"it's really really fun" should be enough. Just leave it at that!
for me nightriding makes the wood mine. The dog walkers, runners and other pollutants are tucked up in front of Eastenders. the singletrack extends ahead of me, but rather than 50ft of vision I only have 25. I've got to think twice as fast & can only see the 20deg the light picks out. It's total focus. oh & the odd dear that gets into the trail and freezes in the beam...
Oh & sorry, but I don't get the 24hr thing. Soz.
night riding: started through neccesity butfound i love it, for me the peace, the solitude, the crisp air are all enjoyable. nothing better however as following frollicking deer down twisty singletrack at summers evening sunset, with the sun rays breaking through the tree canopy. or getting on top of the downs in the bleak winter and looking down on the city lights.
24hr racing, hmmm ask me after 24:12. the appeal for me is the personal challange, and the sleep depreavation.
night riding under a full moon, naked apart from the chicken entrails - magical !
(that's what I'd tell em)
