Hi,

New to using a Garmin (or any GPS).

I've plotted a GPX File using Ordanance Survey route planner which is 100 miles long. When i transfer it to the Etrex and press "go" it shows the route as 76 km. I rode this route on Wednesday and the pink navigation line i was following stopped abruptly at 76km...

The routes made up of 594 waypoints and is 46KB.

I've also just moved a route of the 100 mile SDW across to the etrex and its only showing 50.1km!!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Any tips or advice?

Ta

Is the GPX file a route or track?

I thought the limit for a route was something like 250 or 300 route points in a route. Any more than that in a gpx file will get truncated.

I'd try splitting it in 2, or using gpsbabel to convert to a track, where the limit is 1000's of points (but might lose direction instructions if it's a track).

edit: not sure about the etrex 20, but on the etrex vista, you can scroll through the list of points in the route. if the last one is <594, then you know it's been truncated and what the limit is.

Upload it as a Track not a Route, then follow the line on the screen.

Sounds like too many route points to me too.

Is it possible in OS to convert it to a track? I've asked it for "route directions" which seems to have given me two way points (start & finish) and one continuous line - but i can't see how to save this option...

Do i HAVE to do my route plotting in Basecamp to create a track? I kinda like the OS Maps site for route plotting.

I do it using Basecamp. I'm pretty sure the OS app/website doesn't provide this option

I use gpsbabel to convert between formats. Don't have the command handy right now though, but for me that's usually to convert the other way (I think the endomondo mapper outputs track, when I want route).
Although I tend to use milermeter to map (not sure if that can dish out tracks rather than routes)

Ahh - ok. I was coming to this conclusion. Many thanks. Need to get to grips with Basecamp then. I believe i can create the route as a track there.

OK - i'm creating my track in Basecamp - however when i "join tracks" it seems to add a straight line track direct back to the start - how do i remove this โ“

I'm not sure why you're joining tracks but it's possible you've got them in the wrong order. There is a little pop-up box that asks what order they should be in.

^The undo button works wonders.

FWIW, I create things as "Routes" in Basecamp, because following roads, etc. is easier. When I've finished, I'll create a track from the route (right click on the route or click button in the route properties window) and transfer this to the Etrex.

Most of the on-line planners (e.g. bikehike.co.uk) can also generate a gpx track.

Most of the time the process works fine, but I've been caught out just often enough to check that the whole track appears on the Etrex screen before leaving home.

The Etrex 20 can only handle a maximum number of waypoints imported (150???) It then joins them up to make a route, if you want turn by turn instructions. I made my routes in Bikehike.co.uk - they have an option to cut the route you have designed to a certain number of waypoints, which you can then export.

The simple option ( good backup) is to also save as a basic track, then you at least have the pink line to follow all the time on the screen.
