Can routes/courses be planned on Tracklogs or Memory Map on a pc and then overlaid on Topo when downloaded to the Edge? Or would it simply be a 'breadcrumb' trail as per Edge 305?

Yes, you can create courses and get them into the 705 giving you a thick purple line to follow faultlessly. I bodged together a route round Edale and Hope last week using Tracklogs, Memory Map and Topo.

But

The only thing to use to navigate with on a 705 is a .crs file and Topo doesn't generate them. You need to use a utility like gpx2crs.exe (which I have a copy of) to turn the gpx into a crs then use garmin Training Centre to upload it.

Does that sound like a faff? Yes it bloody well is.

If, like me you're a cheapskate and have only got the free evaluation version of Memory Map, you'll have to use gpsbabel to turn the gpx file into mmo to work on the routes in Memory Map.

Can't you just draw the track on MM, save as a GPX file and copy it to the GPX folder on the 705.
I can't be bothered to try it out.

I've found the best way to put routes onto the 705 is to plan the route at www.bikehike.co.uk and then upload it to your 705 as a GPXX file (which is 705 specific).

The good thing about www.bikehike.co.uk is that you plan the route on Google Maps, but there's an OS map window as well, which contains more detail.

Dibbs, that's all I do with my 705 (saving GPX files directly from MM to the SD card).

I've found mine doesn't like 'routes' in Memory Map, but is fine with 'tracks'. If I do a route, it seems to keep drawing random links back to main roads - although I'm bound to be doing something wrong.

If you want to stay legal, the open source maps to have on the unit are great. The UK one I'm using has all the minor roads where I live, many bridleways and come with or without contour lines.

Brilliant: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download

EDIT: I use the talkytoaster with contours: http://sites.google.com/site/talkytoasteruk/ukmaps

I Found the same iamtheresurrection i even asked the garmin guys at the outdoor show to wich there was an awful lot of head scratching i even had the memory map route printed and my 705 with me with the random navigation lines and the guys there couldn't work it out.
Now i just plan a route then convert to track and it seems fine

Hi Mick

I've never tried Topo properly. I thought I'd try open source first and if I thought it was lacking I'd stump up the cash for Topo, but I really don't feel like I'm missing anything.

I'd thoroughly recommend trying it before you shell out for Topo.

Cheers
Craig

Dunno how its was like the map was flipped but the words werent. And to be honest it looked better than the topo i have
