[#9908672]

My Dad is in his early 70's.

Given Spring is here ( fingers crossed) he is looking to get an ebike, for pottering round the local lanes, etc.

Given there is no need for off-road capability, budget ideally max of £1,500 but could stretch to £2,000, what would the STW massive suggest?

Ideally at sale price to get higher spec for less £....

Thanks.

Mrs M is looking at an electric Orbea Katu. It looks capable, and with 20" wheels is easier to store than longer bikes

Have a look at cube, they do some decent ebikes for well under 2k.

Personally, i would go for the cheapest bosch equipped bike, my wife has a cube reaction, and its fine. Ive done 35 miles on it and still had 40% charge remaining, i rode from my work to home, with a big backpack, wearing a shirt and tie. I weigh 20 stone.

Im under no illusions, I couldn’t do the same journey on a normal bike.

My daughter has a bike from juicy bikes,  https://www.juicybike.co.uk/electric-bikes/roller it seems to have everything you would need in a general purpose bike. Comes out well in reviews and reasonably priced.

Pinnacle do a nice one.

Looks like a spot on all rounder. Good brakes and gears, nice wide tyres, versatile.

Quite fancy one myself.

Try a cube from Freeborn cycles - helpful, very good on prices (discounts easily available if you ask) Get a cube with the bosch cx motor- livelier than non cx motor.

No need for off road, I'd get a Kalkhoff Aggattu. This is the go to bike for town and just riding along. I'd also buy the ladies step through version, because mounting is so much easier. 50cycles often have demo versions reduced and an excellent used bike sales service.

As above re step thru, my Mum's fella (life long roadie) is in his 70's and suffering from early parkinsons. He bought a  KTM step thru hybrid ebike (or very low crossbar), because cocking his leg over bikes was becoming a bit of a struggle.

Thanks all.

I have a mint 2007 Trance in the shed....so, anyone done a Bafang conversion....just wondering.....the bike spec would be good, although the electric bits may not be as good as Bosch, etc?

My folks have got themselves Ridgebacks, and are very pleased with them, but there are lots of similarly spec'd bikes out there now.

I would recommend getting a bike with a bottom bracket mounted torque sensing motor, rather than the ones that just have an on/off wheel motor. They cost more, but feel like pedalling a bike. The cheaper wheel motors just ride like electric scooters; you don't have to pedal properly, just turn the cranks round.
