Anyone here bought a bmx after never having one before? I was just watching josh bryceland riding his bmx down the canal towpath where his dad lives and it just looked great fun.

Theres a new pumptrack opened a few miles from ludlow, in the next village, and I thought why not get a bmx to ride on it, and just generally lark about on.

Would I feel self conscious, that all the kids are looking at a 39 year old guy on a bmx, is it just a fad?

Ive seen that some decent bmxs with good reviews are in the sales for about 200 quid, so maybe worth a punt 😉

Any advice ? 🙂

I'm going to put some pegs on it soon... after the Trans Savoie as I don't want to pick up an injury before then 👿

Full face helmet & pads is the advice I've given myself after my last pump track session - had a properly painful crash and managed to land on almost everything at once.

It's good fun though.

I bought a second hand We The People BMX - got scared after playing around on it as it came brakeless. Never got round to putting brakes on it, never really used it.

I'm moving somewhere with this just down the road very soon though so I must try and have a proper go (when the youts are at school).

Yeah you don't want pegs on there for doing the Trans Savoie. 🙂

Buy a full face as above and pads, lots of pads. My arse remains swollen 5 weeks after my first run out on my new Redline.

The kids are great and have been very welcoming of old folks joining them down at the Royston Rockets track.

Similar to you - I just built up a 24" wheeled DMR Rhythm cos I couldnt bring myself to get a BMX

now got to learn how to jump on the local pump track / skills park

means having to re-learn how to manual / bunnyhop / jump / fall down

Blatant plug but I'm selling my hardly used Sunday Trail Scout, awesome spec for the money - doubt you'd find anything better for the £200 I currently have it listed for on ebay 🙂 Full of odyssey and sunday parts, most completes of this price seem to come with unbranded or low end components.

I've often thought about going down to Royston bmx track (on mtb though, don't have a bmx.) But always been put off at the thought of embarrassing myself in front of all the rad kids.

I might have a look one day...

I got into bmx when I fell into coaching it as a job, aged 35. It's so much fun. I started on a Haro Pro Xl, now got more bike than I need in an Avent TR7 xxl with Answer carbon fork!

Have bought a wtp trust too recently, n+1 n'all that.

I say do it!

I wouldn't get a full face lid unless you really want to stand out from the crowd... or are planning Hoffman Condor moves.

Shin pads are a good idea unless your a flat pedal expert. Knee and elbow are good but the more padding you wear the hotter you are going to get... and if your planning to roll around and practice pumping and little things is the padding really required? I tend to pad up if I'm planning to do something new or higher risk than just faffing about, but for rolling and faffing around I find the pads uncomfy and hot.

Best advice I can give is to take it easy and have fun. Don't try and run before you can walk type of thing... its rather too easy to think that some things look easy to do but reality is they are not. Just rolling and pumping around the park getting a feel for things like rolling up and down the ramps is good fun...

for kids of all ages 😆
