As the title really.
The Durness to Cape Wrath ferry runs until the end of September. Does anyone have any idea how two of us with bicycles may get across and back in early October?

Get in touch with the ferryman and ask for a private trip.

Or get in touch with the cafe and see if they can help - maybe put you in touch with another boat owner.ย

Be aware that even in the summer when the ferry is running, it stops operating if there's bad weather. (I'd cycled all the way from Dover!!)

It's all subject to weather anyway so even the scheduled ferry is not very reliable. Instead hoof round the obvious circuit that takes you round the bay. Good luck, it's a helluva slog.

Is there another option then? I'd been told that it wasn't viable.

Is that a speculative suggestion, or do you know someone who's done this please?

The cafe is open all year and they obviously get supplies in and travel back and forth to "the mainland" so they'll be aware of any alternatives.ย

The "ferry" is just a guy with a wee boat. Private charters have been done in the past, so I guess it's just a question of it being worth his while.ย

@MadBillMcMad - have you sent me any messages more recently than August last year, as I can't seem to find them?

Have to agree with @MadBillMcMad in all my decades spent tramping the Scottish hills the visits to Kervaig have been right near the top of my most memorable experiences. Magical doesn't really do it justice.

There is an alternative, the walk round the bay. It's a real slog but when it's too windy for the boat, what else are you going to do if you're painfully target fixated?ย

ย

Or you are on your way back from Kervaig when the ferry is off due to weather.

I'm planning to head up there in May. I was planning one night at Kervaig. Maybe a lazy two nighter would be better. Who knows if I will be back any time soon?

@kramer Just resent. The lighthouse shop is open 24/7, had a good soup there and bought a bottle of wine for the bothy.

We managed to get the first official ferry of the year on May 1st 2022

Early October has also been the date for theย Joint Warriorย military exercise which sees the area closed for a week or two. I don't know if the 2025 dates are available yet.ย

Thanks for all the replies. We're in the process of moving everything to the week before as it makes stuff a lot simpler.

I spoke to the chap in the cafe, he said that if the ferryman is around and there are people in town who want to go across, weather and exercises permitting, he'll take you.
