There are 2 pairs of bridleways just north of Dufton that then merge into 2 bridleways and end up in Garrigill. I'm thinking of doing a loop, are any of the bridleways better than the others or in a particular direction?
Dufton to Knock then up the Bastid Tarmac climb to the radar station is err..tarmac, dunno what the descent down Trout Beck's like (but need to know cos were'e doing it soon) The BW from where Trout Beck meets the Tees, to Garrigill is tarmac also.
The BW from Milburn up to Silverband Mine is a grassy slog.
Don't know about the one from Blencarn over Wildboar Scar but the one from Kirkland to Gregs Hut/Garrigill is/was good.
I'd be inclined to go up The Bastid Tarmac, down Trout Beck to GG then back past Gregs Hut.

Right, I organised the North Pennines MTB Marathon over there last year.
Of the two from Dufton, the one from Knock up to Great Dun Fell is tarmac all the way up (but a bridleway, not a public road) so is the best way of gaining height. It is evil though, especially after a couple of pints in The Stag in Dufton. The other bridelway from Milburn is nigh-on non-existent, especially when you get higher up. BUT there is a cheeky trail down from Silverband Mine that follows the route of the old aerial tramway. From there, brielfy join the bridleway then there's an even cheekier sheeptrack next to the fallen-down wall that takes you north to Crowdundle Beck and down to Milburn on the north side of the bog that is Red Carle.
Personally, for the best of it, I'd go up the "road" to Great Dun fell. cheekily follow the Pennine Way north over Great and Little Dun Fell, then swing west down the longest uninterrupted descent in England that is Wild Boar Scar. Then head south along the lanes, or for extra gnarr-points, head back up from Kidlland over the Corpse Road past Gregs Hut to Garrigill, then up to Cow Green Reservoirs and High Cup Nick, finishing with the kick-ass descent down to Dufton.
the Troutbeck Bway ought to be good, but sadly is so washed out that its not fun up or down 🙁
