Hiya,
Been trying to get hold of a short (70mm)drilled stem for my CX bike, for cable routing but its impossible to find anything. My LBS can get hold of a 100mm and above only. Just thought I would try here in case anyone knows where I can get one-worth a try!

You might be better off getting a brake cable mount that clamps onto the fork - less flutter as well.
Alternatively, try a custom bike builder - Hunter Cycles in the US might be able to help.

Errr, just buy a 70 mm stem and get it drilled?

It's not rocket science, it's just drilling a hole through it, big enough for the cable to pass through.

Well been advised not to do that, got a few funny responses from bike mechanics (nothing unusual there) from mentioning that one. I think safety is the issue.

Poo. The stresses put on a stem are far greater than those created by braking. Sounds like bike mechanics who are too young to me.
Having said that, the problems people experience with judder under braking are best solved by a pivot/cable end point as close to the brakes as possible, so a fork mounted cable stop is best. Of course that means drilling the fork, much to the dismay of the aforementioned youth.

If you going to drill the stem a few things I would try and do or think about
Get a heavyer duty stem eg DH type stem.
Pilot drill the holes
de burr the holes.
and if you can ream the hole after.

i wouldn't drill a stem.

normally built to save weight - then you put a hole in it. nah.

i'd like a 100mm one - what brand is it?

Don't really know enough to explain the problem well but if I turn the wheel too sharply the cables move and the front brake starts rubbing, eventually it seems to go back into place, not a biggy but I'd like to sort it out. I'll have a look into your other suggestions thanks.
Tom Thumb not sure of the brand i'll ask at the bike shop for you if you like (that particular mechanic is very helpful but didn't advise drilling either).
