Hi, I am trading out my xtr triple to a new xtr double. Thing is, it's. race with 32/40 chainrings. I am running a 10 spd 11:32 at the back so hopefully that might lower the range a little. I am a 43 yr old over weight weekend warrior, not a racing whippet with thighs of steel
What day reckon, will I need to get smaller rings?

Personally I'd go lower if you ride hills a lot. 29, possibly 28 as like you I don't have thighs of steel.

So, your best ratio is 1:1... That's going to hurt on anything with a reasonable hill on linger rides.
I'd at least stick an 11-36 cassette out back to increase ratio spread. Assuming budgets not an issue

What's the best idea 36 on the back and move to a 28 on the inner?

Both IMO.
I run 29/40 with 11t36
29:36 is a great granny:granny ratio for climbs and a safety on long rides or yesterdays test of metal 67km 1200m elevation race. I'm normally fairly strong but wouldn't want less than 29:36.. Although my hard tail is 32:11-36 but not an all day bike or race bike

race XTR double is 40/28, not 40/32. and with a 11-36 cassette it's almost too spinney

(45 on a chameleon) 8)

I thought there were a few XTR double chain ring combos?

I normally run road cassettes with a double, but them I ride SS a lot, so don't mind grinding up hills all day.
