Is this a load of old cobblers or can I really equate my 6 year old lab to someone of 42?

Are we just trying to equate an average dog life to an average human life?

12 for a dog = 84 for a human.

Dogs certainly settle down around 2-3 years which is the equivalent to teenage years in humans. But they slow down less at the other end of the scale. A ten year old dog is usually still as fit as a racing snake.

Different breeds vary widely it is true. 8-10 years for a Boxer 15 years plus for a Whippet.

My whippet is looking great physically and she is 13 1/2.

It depends on the breed.

Large breed dogs usually live for say up to 12 years on average.

Medium say 16 Years

Small say 14-18 (esp terriers)

So I would look up the breed average - if its a heinz 57 then bank on about 16 years is a good gestimate ๐Ÿ™‚

Its all a bit of a misonomer really but its makes understaning where your dog is in its life a bit easier ๐Ÿ™‚

It depends on the size of dogs of course. A 8 year old terrier is like a rocket compared to a really big dog like a Great Dane.

My 13year old terrier are still capable of shifting pretty damn quick - as the cheeky ginger tom from down the round found out on Sunday. Fortunatley the tom was quicker still.

As was mine until a few weeks ago, I think she may have twisted something as she doesn't seem herself.

Off to the vets we go.
