[#4710372]

Hi folks,
I am embarking on my first ever scratch build.

I have hit what may be a potential problem straight away.

I have got my rear wheel assembly ready to install and it looks like the central bit of the hub (the bit tat is externally threaded) is only going to be resting on the rear mech hanger on the drive side and NOT into the actual frame dropout.

Surely this can't be right....can it?

I am inside now and just thought......have I been a prize bellend and put the hanger on the Inside of the frame rather then the outside!? Its a 2009 specialized rockhopper in case any of you are familiar

Reallistically, you can't put the mech hanger on the wrong side, but the axle does look a tad short there, how much is sticking out at the other end? Normally about 5mm protrudes past the locknuts on each end, and on cup and cone type hubs you can shuffle the axle through with a set of cone spanners.
Edit, the frame looks to have a recess for the hanger to fit there, have I missed something?

Looks like there is a bit of space between the frame and the hanger.

put your skewer in and tighten it up, then have a look. always looks worse when its not all compressed.

Looks like 5 mm + to me [ i thought of that as well] so that hanger cannot be right

over time the wife and I have had three specialized's between us and on all three the hanger went on the inside. OP's looks right in this respect. [edit]-just popped out to look at the commuter and it looks just like the op's ie the drive side locknut sits against the hanger not the frame.
Locoboy, count how many threads (as in screw threads) of the axle you can see protruding from each side of your rear hub. If they are the same, just do the quick release up nice and tight and you'll be reet.

std is 4.5mm axle protruding IIRC.

Just adjust it to have more on the DS.

I couldn't sit here in the firing line for long! I just checked and the hanger can only go on one way, it has a recess on the INSIDE of the frame, so its on right....Phew!

I have just measured the protrusion on both sides...

5mm on the drive side and 5.14mm on the other side.

Are they supposed to be equal or should I just shuffle it across to suit?

About equal, wouldn't normally mess with it for that amount. As said above, check it again with the skewer tightened(hadn't noticed that).

no point adjust for that small a gap you would only gain 0.07 mm

what he said try and see if you die ๐Ÿ˜‰

they are supposed to be equal but also so that on neither end of the axle comes out beyonds the outside of the dropout (you wouldn't be able to fasten the wheel up properly). 0.14mm is not worth bothering about IMHO.

TBF the hanger will butt up against the frame recess so it's unlikely to cause any problems.

Well thanks for the flurry of replies, I am reassured that it must be normal ( thanks DezB ๐Ÿ˜€ )for confirmation. It does seem a bit poor that even though the hanger sits in a recess it is taking 99% of the loading on that side.

I am sure I will encounter some more WTF situations throughout my build.

Thanks for the help!
Colin

Its seriously not a problem, I wouldn't worry about it.
