Doesn't fall to bits after 6 months?

I'm nto sure what else to try my current saint m820 pedals after 6 months are crunchy as hell with play and don't spin freely

My mallet e fell to bits with in a year and a refresh kit...

Is there anything reliable out there that just works and is very easy to service or doesn't need servicing within 6 months use?

My bog standard Shimano SPDs are several years old. Can't remember the model number but they are just the ones around £30-£40. I've three pairs all going strong.

The bog standard Shimano ones just keep on trucking for years.
And cost about the same as some cleats

[Dons Flameproof suit]
My CB Mallet Races, wonderful things, go about as well as my Candy 3's on the other bike

When required a service takes about 15 mins, simply knock the bearings out and replace them, whole pedal unbolts to make it simple and easy.

Generally about 18-24 months between services for me.

Yep agreed those cheaper no platform ones I had last a lifetime... Never need servicing and basically just run into the ground

Thats why I thought the saints would be the holy grail.. Instead five to six months down the line there's play noise and they don't spin freely 🙁

My original Shimano SPDs (first generation XT) were still going strong after 25 years. Never changed the bearings or any parts and never even greased them. They may still be working - sold them with my last bike.

Just looking at CRC I think mine are the M540s. They last long enough and are cheap enough that when they die I just replace them. About the only "maintenance" is putting anti-seize on the threads before fitting to the cranks.

Shimano M520s. Pretty indestructible, but at 20 quid it's not the end of the world if you do knacker them.

Xt SPD pedals just keep on working. Every few years I open them up and add some new grease and tightening them back up purges out the old grease. All I ever do to them.

@mikewsmith, I have a pair of Crank Bro's 50/50 flats, untouched/running smoothly after 4 yrs of abuse.
Excellent pedals. 😂

Crank brothers have by far the best feel I've ever used

Mikwsmith... You surely can't be British based if they are lasting that long!?

I've not met one person thats had them last a full British winter without them being ****ed

I like the idea of the bigger platform for when being clipped out but as its getting tiresome wasting money trying to find the best set I may just go back to the 20 or 30 quid ones and run them into the ground

I've run the latest ones with the updated innards through some very shitty Tassie conditions before coming back here Jan last year, you can pop the end cap off and add some more grease in 2 mins to keep then real sweet.
Worth it every time for the clipping action and ride quality

M530's.
Can be had for £20. Buy New ones when the cleats wear out.

Ive got some m520s some 530s and some 424s (i think) none of them need replacing nor have they been serviced. 530s ans 520s have been commuted on as well as mtb. 424s are nearly 15 years old. 530s must be 5+ years old 520s are from this year.

I cant speak highly enough of cheap Shimano pedals

Sounds like you are looking for some that have a bit of a platform.

I have found the old Shimano DXs last forever. Got a 15 year old set that get swapped from various bikes and are still good.

I tried the DMRs but was disappointed, now trying the Nukeproofs.

My CB Eggbeater 2s developed play after 6 rides. Took the end cap off as obviously they just needed a tighten but that was wrong, they've just got play after 6 rides instead.

I used to knacker Time Atacs when I rode more regularly than now. Shimano 540 have been more durable and are easier to chuck some grease in too.

Time ATAC XS Carbons still working after ~12 years, not sure the newer versions are so good.

Many many years ago when I was skint a kind soul on here gave me a pair of shimano SPDs for commuting.
They are still running. I haven’t touched them at all. Nothing.

They are made out of magic, diamonds and cockroaches I reckon.

If you want a pair of Time Atak plus cleats just holler. I have a pair in the garage looking for a good home.

For many years I was a CB acolyte, and they still have (IMHO) the best feel of any clipless pedal. But, and it is a big but, longevity isn't their strong point.

On the the other hand, as stated above, Shimano M530s are bombproof, and only £20.
Also, on my other bike I've got some Nukeproof Horizon CS pedals, and after 2 winters and zero maintenance they're still as smooth as the day I fitted them.

M647 / DX. Figured they would have been superseded by now but no, so just bought another pair last month to go on a second bike. I broke a pair once after 7-8 years but the only thing I’d touched with a tool in that time is the thread to remove from the crank and the spring tensioner. No bearing work whatsoever.

Sarawak- if nobody else has hollered then I am doing so now. I had some spares once, somewhere...

M647's here too. Six years without maintenance and running as smooth as new. They have been taking on some salt spray on winter commutes in addition to off-road use. And I weigh well into triple figures too.

Not pretty, though, so I've been waiting for them to die to get something nicer looking, but I think it'll be some time still.

I always use Shimano M540 pedals, seem to last forever. I just had to replace a set Shimano SPDs (not sure of the model) that I had been using on and off for about 20 years - I had worn through the metal on the top of the pedal, they worked fine and spun smoothly.

I hope the Time pedals recommended above are better than their road ones. I had an axle snap on the Time Xpresso pedals I was using on my road bike. I hit the road pretty hard and very lucky there weren’t any cars around when I came off. Having looked on line it doesn’t look like I am the only one to experience this. Never putting a Time pedal on any of my bikes again.

Take a look at the nuke proof horizons I’ve had a pair for couple of years on the big bike and they’ve been bombproof.

Biggest perk is they use spd cleats so you can wear same shoes if you’re clipless elsewhere.
