I generally ride everywhere as hard as I can. I know that I'm not the fittest or the fastest, but I never pootle along. Consequently, I sometimes catch up men who are ambling along happily..... Until they see they're being over-taken by a 40-something woman.... The look of horror on their faces and their subsequent acceleration is hilarious. 🙂
I was riding the initial "3-mile climb" at Llandegla on Sunday, trying to beat my best time, and caught up a couple riding together. The bloke was all Lycra'ed up with matching kit, and looked fit. He was not happy to see me pass. They accelerated and tried to catch me twice but the woman couldn't keep up and I left them behind. Then, several minutes later they overtook me, with him pushing her with his hand on her back, the rest of the way to the top. I'm not sure what he was trying to prove to me!
Do you mind being over taken by middle-aged women?! 😛

It wouldn't even occur to me to differentiate...now, should you have happened to be on an ebike, it would've been a point of pride to hand your ass to you on a platter*

*% of ass handery decreases proportional to ebike wattage increase 🙁

I got used to it early in life, I started racing as a junior and we'd start with the women in most races. I was pretty crap and you had people like Louise Jones racing at the time so I soon got used to getting dropped (and lapped in crits) by women.

To be honest the only people I don't like getting overtaken by is commuters when I'm out on an evening training ride but again that's because I'm rubbish :p

You don't want to know what goes on in the mind of certain insecure middle-aged men. 🙂

Did you put the hammer down to extract the most fun possible out of lycra man's discomfort?

Everyone wants to overtake the pony tail, eh?
It shouldn't matter, but us blokes are delicate little things when it comes to chauvinistic pride.

I may or may not chase depending on what takes my fancy but it wouldn't make any difference whether you were a man or woman. If I were riding with my other half I certainly wouldn't, I'd just say hi as you went past. I'm a 40 something male if it makes a difference

A few weeks back I was riding up Box Hill wearing a ADH shirt, middle age lady draws up to the side of me wearing the same shirt. Nice shirt she says, did you buy it mail order and pisses off up the road!

That was annoying.

Brilliant. My wife just mentioned similar looks of horror when overtaking people on her Brompton.

When I'd just returned to MTBing back in 2009 my first singletrack ride ever was having a go a the Big Dog XC race - I suspect I was overtaken by every woman in the race, uphill and down!

Women who I'm not riding with? Of course not. Sames goes for men too. I'm generally doing my own thing.

Years ago I used to go out training rides with a woman whose lowest gear was 42x19.

She would kick my arse on every hill. At, er, certain times of the month she would really lay it down and absolutely take no prisoners!

I was just grateful she would wait at the top for me... 😆

I ride for fun so don't care if someone's faster or slower than me regardless of their sex, presumed everyone else thought the same!! I'll never be the fastest and I'm not the slowest so it's all fine with me 😀

Judging by my experiences commuting in Sheffield, there are a few male commuters here with issues - either they object to being overtaken by a woman, or by a rider on a hybrid, or both, but they have to try to overtake again...

Gender makes no difference
- if I am trying hard and get overtaken then it makes me realise I am not really as good as I think I am
- if I am coasting along then who cares

There's always someone faster, fitter, braver, stupider than you on the trails. I sometimes try to make people work for the overtake but usually on climbs I'm in my own world of pain so just get on with it.

I used to hack around That London's Famous London on a 1980s Raleigh Cameo. The MAMILs racing the Etape du Embankment used to visibly shake with rage when I overtook them, or still worse, just sat drafting them. 😈

No I don't like being overtaken by anyone but as I'm not very fit it happens a lot 🙂

The gender of the overtaker is totally irrelevant I'll try and chase them whatever! I see it as a bit of mild 'training'!

My 13 year old son now passes me on the harder hills and annoyingly he chats as he does so!

I overtook one of the regular podium finishers from Gorrick's Female Expert category whilst having a bimble at Tunnel Hill at the weekend. On a hill, and I wasn't even trying that hard.

(she was out riding with her young daughter, prob 7 or 8 years old give or take. They'll both be faster than me in another year or two....)

PS. I was quite nice about it though, as on the next section, instead of making them eat my dust I stopped to clear a grisly disembowelled pigeon off the path rather than letting them ride through it. It was like the bird version of game of thrones.

I would say it is not a problem

But I do think that some respect should be shown for my fragile ego.

On the road in the Peak a woman passed me on a climb. No problem. She then stopped after about 100 yards to put on a jacket. She then over took me again. I'm sure she didn't do it on purpose but she made it very clear that she was able to ride up the hill faster than me, but with so little effort she was getting cold....

Also my experience.

If I'm daydreaming on the way home pootling up the hill and you saunter pass me, I'm likely to pick my pace up a bit. Not your fault for being faster at that moment in time, just your fault for spoiling my reverie 😈

The only thing I used to mind, was being overtaken in a XC race by a woman who then proceeded to hold me up in the singletrack, cos she was fit but a shit rider 😆
([edit]thinking about it - nothing to do with gender!)

Nope, but I spent 1/4 a lap at cannock early last august following a group of lycra clad girls, me riding as fast as I could to just about keep up, only for them to peel off when they got to tackeroo - turns out they had been doing a casual warm-up ride ready for their nationals race 😥

I was overtaken by 3 women near the start of the Bournemouth Marathon a couple of weeks ago. Me ego wasn't too shattered by the fact that they were all tiny Kenyan professionals, and also because I overtook them all later 😆

Several years ago the wife and I had a week of biking around different spots in Wales. She was getting really confident with her skills and her fitness was at a good level too. We upset a group of guys who through they were pretty fast by completely ripping through them all, and they all tried to up their game to keep up, and failed 😀

Cheers, Rich

Couldn't care less who I get overtaken by. What annoys the hell out of me is guys who call it "getting chicked". 🙄

I did one of the Exposure Big Night Out rides many years ago with a couple of the Specialized Women's MTB team at the time, Kate Potter and Jenn O'Connor. Both world class riders, both regulars on the Elite Women's XC World Cup circuit. I knew both of them and they were just out on a training ride but even so it was towards the top end of what I was comfortable with to do the whole route with them. We passed and dropped loads of guys and it was hilarious to see them double take at being ovetaken by two girls, speed up and try to hold the wheels then blow up. 😆

Both girls absolutely thrashed me in the sprint finish.

I don't mind one bit, only time I get slightly miffed, is when I am cycling on cycle paths on my way home from work and I come across the racer type going slow and I overtake, only for it to turn into a race, I carry on at the same speed, only for them to drop back and the whole thing starts again, what is that all about. I have done a days work, I am not up for a race, I'm thinking about my tea!!
My wife has an e-bike (she has her reasons) and regularly drops me when I am on the mountain bike, CX bike not so, still have to work hard though, and I get a nice view.

I got used to it early in life, I started racing as a junior and we'd start with the women in most races.

That takes me back: I remember being overtaken by Caroline Alexander (no surprise there)at Eastridge, and I tried my best to catch her, not because my ego was dented, but because I had a massive teenage crush on her. Obviously, she rode off into the distance.

I rode with Emma Pooley in the alps a while back (she used to ride with a mate who I was visiting) and I well remember her chatting to me up the hills whilst I was trying not to bring a lung up.
Properly owned there and she was so nice the rest of the time.

Edit - I should also say I was overtaken in a xc race a while back by a guy on a unicycle so I have no pedigree to be afraid of losing .....

Some blokes are absolute tools for this, it is a minority though.
A few weeks ago my OH and I were riding up Cressbrook in the Peak when we went past one bloke who was pushing on a bit. She was in front of me and as she pulled level with him he sped up and kept trying and trying to hold her pace. The very second that I pulled alongside he shut it down again 😆

Same at races, some of the slower men just flat refuse to pull over when being lapped by the women, where they'd never do that for the leading men. Pretty pathetic really.

"My wife just mentioned similar looks of horror when overtaking people on her Brompton."

If there's anything that really pisses off MAMILS on expensive racing bikes, it's being overtaken by someone on a Brompton. And if that someone's a woman, I imagine they go into meltdown. 😆

I get overtaken by all sorts of people (my Brompton isn't very fast, it only has 2 speeds). Many of them female. Personally, I don't care, as I'm seldom in a hurry. My wife is often in a hurry, and regularly overtakes men on her ancient old tank of a bike. She often experiences dickish behaviour from them.

Men who can't handle being overtaken by women are quite pathetic, and should probably consider another vehicle. Perhaps a Porsche Macan.

I couldn't care less about being over taken by anyone. I'm not very fit so uphill off road tends to be steady away.
My road rides are not very long (commute is 8 miles) so I tend to go for it and flog myself for that distance, if people overtake me then they are obviously better/fitter. But I don't like racing people, I actually don't like it when i see someone up ahead that I'm catching in case they want to turn it into a race. I just want to ride my own ride.

Bit like the OP, when I'm on a solo ride I push pretty hard so if someone comes past me male or female good luck to them 😀 But I do have my favourite trail sections for a blast so I might rest up a bit before one of those. Overtake me then and I'll probably come flying past a bit later, nothing to do with my ego it's what I'd be doing anyway.

A bit like clod hopper, late last year I was or at least I thought I was pushing on a bit, it was getting dark quick and beginning to rain, my mate had already shouted from behind something along the lines of, No energy, nothing left, can't keep up? Without looking back I thought he was behind me, something was there as it was making a noise, clunking, clanking, so I pressed on a bit thinking he's still in there and the strange noises eventually drew near level. I turned expecting to see my mate and was met with a Lady on a steel framed bike with brackets front and rear for panniers.

She had the shortest Lycra cycling shorts on and bare legs, it was as I said horrible weather. I was cold. She never said a word as she passed so I jumped on her back wheel. We parted at a roundabout, My mate was not happy at being left behind. To this day I've still not seen a nicer pair of legs, I tried explaining this to my mate who had by this time lost the will to live. Called me all sorts for mentioning her legs and that I'd left him behind. Any way I got home and she sent me follow on STRAVA. We crossed paths several times and spoke some months later at a cafe. She said that my mate had shouted "fork in hell look at the legs on that" or words to that effect and that she was expecting the same from me!
I was the only person she'd passed who hadn't made some lewd comment or another? Apparently?

I ride with her a couple of times a Month, she still regularly passes me, I've still never made a comment, so no, I quite like it,

I ride with women who call it being "chicked" so I do as well.

I have no gender bias with regard to being passed and if I'm trying, then fair play. Sometimes I might see it as a wake up call if I'm slacking. I'll then up the effort, not because I've been passed, but because I've been napping.

Nope, Was out ridden off road by a lady on the CX the other week. IMO if you try and avoid the inevitable like that you're not making your self look awesome, just making yourself look like someone who places too much value on looking awesome.

My own pet hate is going more or less the same speed as someone, I'd much rather there was a clear speed difference which ever way round it is.

I'm not often overtaken, which I find odd as I'm not that fit But thinking about it I rarely see other riders out my way. Generally who ever it is fair enough. I'll not bust myself trying to keep up as I could have 10 miles to ride before I get home.

One of my closest riding buddies is of the female persuassion. I'm generally a bit quicker on the uphills but she leaves me for dead on the downs. I think it's brilliant especially at trail centres when the weekend warriors try and keep up with her

I have no issue with being overtaken by faster riders male or female. I do get irritated by some male riders on my commute tho. Either "competitive commuter" who busts a gut to pass then slows down in front or my current pet hate - the fully uniformed ( lycra. aero helmet etc) guy on a road bike who is so slow away from the lights. Happens at least once a day that someone overtakes then at the next set of lights pulls away really slowly due to being on high road gears when I want to pull away quickly on my low geared MTB - they often block me. I want to sprint to my cruising speed as its safer.

Kept getting binned off in the pool last night by a gang of middle-aged tumble-turning women. But then they kept stopping in the shallow end for a natter 😉

No issue. It's only at the very pinnacle of our chosen sports that there's any difference. The rest of us are just playing.

Perhaps I was being a bit sexist in my question, but it only seems to happen when I catch a bloke. Although I did overtake a couple once, while on a long off road climb, where the bloke immediately gave chase and rode with me to the top. When the woman arrived a few minutes later, she made a point of telling me that she was just doing an easy pace. Some people are so competitive with each other. As I said in my OP, I'm competitive with myself, but I'm well aware there's plenty of folks faster than me.

It's not an issue for me but what does annoy me is when people come panting past you and promptly slow down and hold you up.
Do you then overtake them and wait for the inevitable heavy breathing or plod along behind grumbling under your breath?
Almost anybody can overtake me at the moment and often do 🙂

I'll tell you what annoyed me... At the glentress seven, I got overtaken, and took an immediate morale boost from the lovely lycra clad bottom that was now in front. So I followed it up the hill with renewed vigour and eventually, hit a descent and tragically had to re-pass. AND IT WAS A DUDE.

Lovely bum though, still.

Now... if she was on a road bike, on a transition, then yes I would, but the road bike would be the factor, and I would would do my very best to stay with them, while looking relaxed, and trying not to be sick.

If I'm on the 29er I often annoy roadies by sitting on their wheel, especially if they don't say hello as they pass.
But surely it's not as bad as being overtaken by a tourist on one of those London hire bikes? An acquaintance of mine posted some pictures a few years ago of her and her boyfriend riding round the sights of London on a couple of Boris bikes.

They were having a bit of an extended break after her efforts in the Olympic Road Race.

I think she might have overtaken a few commuting heros. If she could be bothered.

He was only a Conti pro, so i'm sure any half way decent 3rd cat would have torn his legs off.
