So, Ive been a bit slack with keeping on top of my cleat wear and ended up with a sore knee on a recent sportive. Hmm, decided it was high time for some new cleats but then I wondered, do Shimano SPD pedals get worn out like the cleats do? If all the springs and bearings work, is there any benefit in changing? I cant rememeber ever changing pedals before other than when the bearings became stiff or something damaged them.
Any thoughts/experiences of changing pedals?
Just bought some M530's from Halfords for less than £20. Needed some new cleats, so a no brainer. Shoes seen tighter On the pedals than the 520 and 540's I have.
I've worn out loads of sets of pedals to the stage where new cleats are still loose as ****.
spd pedals only get changed here when bearings are shot
the cleats are made of a softer metal so they wear a lot quicker than the pedals. eventually the pedals will wear after a few sets of cleats.
Worn out Pedals, Cleats and Bearings with shimano.
Now on CB I wear out cleats and bearings
how do worn cleats cause sore knees ?
yep, I've worn a set of m520s out, they got to the point where they wouldn't hold a new cleat in under power even with the spring wound right up. I reckon they had done 7000km or more and one of the pedals was a lot worse than the other so could have just been damage.
Yes. I wear them all out (520's)
The top plate at the front of the pedal, the bit the front of the cleat sits under eventually rounds out so far that the cleat will no longer stay under it. But if you ride a fair bit somewhere abrasive, you can also wear though the actual pedal body to the point where the spindle is exposed and then seizes, don't ask how I know etc...
I used to buy sacrificial 520s for a tenner to scavenge for spares to keep more expensive versions running and for new cleats,
I prefare worn pedals and cleats. Gives more flat for my knackered knees!
scardeypants - worn out cleats and sore knees...?

I wore out my first set of CB pedals but it wasn't the bearings it was the metal and springs
