[Closed] DIY e-bike on a FS, anyone done it?

Just intrigued really.

I've seen some FS DIY e-bike conversions when doing a Google but they are mostly used for more tarmac based tasks and don't suffer proper mountain biking abuse.

Has anyone done an ebike conversion and thrown it down some steep rough stuff? Did it survive?

Probably should have pointed out that I was thinking more along the lines of bfang mid drive vs hub drive

Given the inability of designers recently to even squeeze a 500ml bottle into a frame, a battery might be a big ask!

I've been looking at it.

You want torque sensing (cadence isn't great), so the most obvious solution is a tsdz2. If you have a standard threaded bb you can make it fit but the chain line may not be great, and on a full sus will probably need to get a bit creative as you can use the rear torque arm (I was going to brace off the front and connect it with a battery mount). Very much doable.

On a press fit it's still possible, but need adaptors and an axle extension kit or use a 100mm fat bike version with various spacers. Again chain line may be bad. I need to measure up mine and see how my tsdz2 squares up.

The cranks are square taper and 175mm, and the q factor is wide. However, they are cheap and it's not a huge worry. The BB axle, bearings and sealing is really basic and the tolerances aren't exactly brilliant, but fortunately it's also very easy to service.

The battery is probably the easier part. You would need to go custom with a custom bag, but worked out that even on a Jeffsy you can fit ~480W battery in (and building a second battery wouldn't be overly expensive as you only need to build the bare basics). Would also be a very low centre of mass.

I recently converted a Santa Cruz Superlight using a TSDZ2 motor.Easy to do except the battery size and position took some thought and measuring.Largest battery that fits is a 11ah bottle carefully positioned to allow rear suspension to work.
More pics and info if anyone is interested.

A friend of mine bought a chinese motor and controller and welded it into a an old DMR frame, which he then used to regularly leave me in his dust at Innerleithen. He carried the battery in his rucksack. Seemed to work really well and was a big help for days out digging etc.

Superlight build.
250w TSDZ2 motor kit with vlcd5 controller £240
36v10.5ah Samsung celled bottle battery £200
Bafang crank arms £18
Braze-on adapter clamp £5
----------------
Stripped out cranks,bb and front derailleur
Fitted motor with clamp and steel rod as anti-rotation.Bit of a bodge but could not use rear stays to clamp.
Bafang cranks are for better Q factor.
Chain line seems fine with 9 speed cassette.
