Should I give this a go by cutting a grove in a steel square taper BB, or is this something best left to LBS.

Depends if you can get it started.
If you can get it started then try.
Also filing or grinding a taper on the threads that are going in (ie the bottom bracket)to replicate the shape of a die, will help.
Take it easy, if it is aluminium then lube with parafin, turn a little back off, do not force. It is all about feel that is difficult to explain.
Ideally you want to reshape the threads but more than likely will remove some metal making them weaker. Sotake it easy next time you tighten.
